CM Club: Do you know anything about the floor space rule?

I have found this on some random website am not sure if it's accurate?

AGE OF CHILD FLOOR AREA PER CHILD
0 ? 1 3.70 m2
1 ? 2 2.80 m2
2 ? 6 2.32 m2

What does this include/exclude? If there is a "nursery" for the children to sleep in is that excluded? How about the garden? I know lots of childminders and none of them seem to have this sort of space so am very confused!

Back in the days when I was there [Ofsted], laying out newspaper squares to represent the space was one of the tips new CM inspectors were given. So it is usable space - the space minus the furniture.

EYFS Framework (May 2008)

The premises and equipment must be organised in a way that meets the needs of children.
In registered provision, providers must meet the following space requirements:
~ children under two years: 3.5 m2 per child;
~ two year olds: 2.5 m2 per child;
~ children aged three to five years: 2.3 m2 per child.

The provider must ensure that, so far as is reasonable, the facilities, equipment and access to the premises are suitable for children with disabilities.
The premises must be for the sole use of the provision during the hours of operation.

Expect it is up to the inspector who does the registration inspection. They use their judgement, and newspaper squares if they feel it's necessary.
