1 day nanny rates of pay

Just been reading through some old threads and i am sure this question has been answered a million times but how much do you pay a nanny in the South West?

I have secured a fab nanny for my childcare needs but we are both unsure of rates etc. She has babysat and looked after my kids for a couple of years but is now qualified and ready to start work officially. I feel like I want to get things exactly right for her to set her off on the right foot in her working life.
My kids are 4,3 and 1 so she will have my baby all day, my son from midday and my daughter after school. I start work at 7.30am and finish at 8pm so she will start at 7 and finish around 8.30pm. Is that possible? is she allowed to do that?
All answers gratfully received. Thankyou

It's a very long day, but she can do it so long as you're both happy with it.

I'm in the South West too, about £8 an hour gross seems average among people I know(varies between £7 and £9 depending on age/quals/experience). Absolute minimum you'd be able to pay is £100 a day I should think, I'd want more like £120.

Thanks for that it seems like a complete mine field once you start looking into employment. I think I might cut my hours down to make it more reasonable for her. I am knackered at the end of the day and they are my kids!!
Am I right in thinking that you pay more for before 9am and after 5pm?

It depends what you agree with the nanny, there's not an official guideline or anything! A standard nanny day is 8am-6pm though, and all hours are usually paid the same. If the nanny wants more pay before or after certain times it depends on whether or not you want to pay it.

Generally you would just agree an hourly rate with a nanny, rather than pre 8am or after 5pm. £8 gross an hour seems reasonable for a newly qualified nanny. A 12½ hour day is long with a late finish. £8ph for 12½ hours is £100, but taking into account the late finish you could offer to up to £110 which is over £8.50ph. Remeber to agree this as a gross amount because if she gets another job on the other days you could be stung for quite a bit of tax on it.

Durrr!! Just realised that it's a 13½ hour day maths is not my strong point, though I have just taught my 3½ year old charge to count in 10's and the 5 year old in 5's

without being flamed, not sure a newly qualified nanny( possibly 18) would be able to cope with 3 under 5 as 1st job - though would be excellent experience

but then again you know this girl, and obv have used her for some years, so ignore me, she sounds perfect

it is a very long day, gen nannies dont chnarge extra for unsociable hours - maybe we should?

I dont know the wages for the south west, but as others have said £8/9gross seems fair

good luck - what do you do that makes you work such long hours?

I work as a nurse so do 12 hour shifts which in some ways is good as I can do less actual days at work but its an early start and late finish.
I take your point about my nanny not being able to cope with 3 kids I will definately keep that in mind when we are planning the details of the job. She is 30+ years old so not quite as young as other nannys just starting out.

I have been speaking to a few local nannies today and most get the minimum wage!! They were all keen to know how much I would pay, I said that I haven't decided, I don't want to open up a can of worms with their employers. I think I have settled on £8 an hour which will make it worth while me going back to work.
Thanks for all your tips. Will keep dropping into the boards.

£8 an hr gross seems fair and remember other nannies who say they are on min wage, they may be on £5-£6 an hr but prob are talking net pay rather than gross.

I remember doing those long shifts as a nurse used to do 7.15am-8.45pm and do 3 shifts a week which I loved but equally dont miss the nights and weekends now I work in the community,

your girl sounds perfect - and yes though age shouldnt have anything to do with it, ie some 18yr olds are very capable - others arent - but same goes for some 30years olds

hope all works out well - and welcome by the way
