One day a week nanny?

picklesmama · 29/03/2009 16:34

I am currently on maternity leave with DS (6 mo). When I was working PT before this, my DD (now nearly 3, and at preschool 4 mornings term-time which works well) was looked after for one day by my SIL and two days by my mum.

When I go back in/after the summer, my mum is keen to continue but my SIL is not. So I am left with one day without childcare. My mum works the rest of the time so cannot increase her hours.

Do you think a nanny is even an option for one day, or is it better to look for two days and have some help on one of my days off - or would this be unattractive to a potential nanny?

Also my MIL used to spend a lot of time with DD on SIL's days, and is keen to continue to pop in for some time in the afternoon - all in all is this sounding like a highly unattractive package for a nanny, and something a good nanny would not be interested in, preferring to work alone, sole charge etc.

Any thoughts/advice/other options are welcome.

Finding a one day a week nanny should be fine - certainly easier than finding a two day a week nanny with you home one day.

My initial thoughts are I wouldn't take a job with the MIL popping in though.

Thanks Willow. Need to convince MIL to switch her visits to one of my days then - although she thinks she is doing a favour (probably why your instinct says no!)

i found a 1 day a week nanny no problem. we had 3 applicants and interviewed 2 - 1 of these was right for us. our nanny has a child of her own and only wants to work part time. the other worked for a family where the mum worked 4 days a week so she needed another day to make it up to her full 5 days. you will want to consider whether you are willing for a nanny to bring her own child along and also realised that thry might not be able to be too flexible on the 1 day a week they would be able to work for you. when we found the right nanny for us i changed the day i was planning to work to fit in with her existing arrangements....

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/03/2009 17:14

can mil not look after your dd for that day to save you money?

or did you not want mil to look after your children?

i wouldnt want mil popping in if i were that nanny

if not, then yes whould be easy to find a one day nanny - put an ad on netmums or gumtree or nannyjob

what area are you in?

Nicadooby · 29/03/2009 20:09

Hi I'm a nanny and I'd say you'd have no problems finding a one day a week nanny, but tbh i'd hate having to say in and see the mil.

nannyL · 29/03/2009 20:13

I am currently looking for a 1 day job
(could be looking for a 2 day job but id prefer a one day job)

yes there are plenty of nannies who would be delighted to have a one day job

where abouts are you based?

picklesmama · 29/03/2009 23:19

Thanks everyone. I'm based in Wimbledon - but am not returning to work until August or maybe September, though I will start looking early July I think. I would look for a Monday (ideally) but could probably change it to a Thursday if required.

Will have to see if I can persuade MIL to change her visiting day as this sounds very unpopular! She has offered to be around as much as she can but she is over 70 and has had some on/off health issues over the years so needs to have flexibility for appointments etc, so not really up to caring for 2 very young children on a regular basis.

Glad to hear that it is an option so will look for a one-day nanny rather than two days with me home one day.

Thanks for the advice! (Any more is welcome!)

pickles

We have an ex-nanny who will be looking for work in August. If you want to put your e-mail address up I can send you a quick note. Would thoroughly recommend, she is about 30 minutes from Wimbledon.

I don't think you would have a problem in finding a 1 day nanny

but you would possibly pay a lot of tax ? as the other family the nanny works for ( on the 3/4 other days would get most allowance ?)

also agree with the MIL thing! i wouldnt mind her accompanying use to an activity / group etc sometimes

but not feeling like she could pop in, as and when she wanted ! lol

FlappyTheBat · 31/03/2009 10:53

Also interested in a one day a week nanny for when dc1 starts school in August, dc2 only 2 so they would be at home all day.

Due to location of my work and travel, the day would be long - 14 hours.

Just out of interest, would a nanny be prepared to work this long, one day a week?
And how much would this approximately be?

thanks,

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2009 11:07

i have worked one long day - and 14hrs is very long bu assume by 7pmish that both will be in bed

used to work for an airline pilot every month or so - was ad hoc and hours were 8am to 10pm - was a killer tbh but it paid the bills

i am more exspensive then others on here, and I would want at least £140 a day for those hours - but sure you could find someone cheaper than me

FlappyTheBat · 31/03/2009 11:19

Would be from 7am - 9pm, dc's get up about 8am and dc1 would be at school 9-3, both at the moment are in bed by 7:15pm.

But might just give up work as don't earn enough to cover nanny costs!
Would have to work 2 days a week to pay for 1 days childcare - doesn't really work for me.

Thanks for info though,

picklesmama · 02/04/2009 00:10

Thanks RachieB - the tax thing is all new to me, would have to get some advice (don't understand why I should pay more tax for less time...? But I will do my homework first)!
MIL will have to pop in another day I think; pretty clear that one's not a runner!!

picklesmama - just make sure you agree agross wage rather than net.

The reason being that if nanny had a 4 day a week job paying £400 and this employer used all her tax code all the wages you pay would be taxable.

If you pay gross - you will pay tax for her and she will have less take home pay. (though it all works out the same for her - it's not that she would be worse off)

picklesmama · 05/04/2009 17:20

Thank you nbee that helps!

hiya...when I was in Uni, as a side and summer job, I worked as a nanny with a 2 and 4 year old. I was working full time with the family, live out, but working 12 hour days, and the MIL (Dads Mum) lived in a Granny flat in the basement of the house, and she would "pop in" at the drop of the hat, no announcement, and there were even times when I would turn around and she would be standing there, almost as if she had snuck in...freaked the living day lights out of me! Anyway, only saying this as she drove me absolutely mad...not that I was doing anything wrong, but she always was undermining me in front of her grandkids (I was and am a trained Early Childhood Educator, so had a pretty good idea of what I was doing!). Her unannounced visits made me tell the parents that I was not going to be able to continue if this continued. So, just something to consider if your MIL is likely to drop by!

picklesmama · 05/04/2009 22:58

Thanks. Yep, I've gathered the MIL popping in is not a runner!
