Hi we need your opinions! We are 2 DCE qualified, Ofsted registered childminders and we have been asked to childmind at a wedding reception. we dont know the people, they googled and found us.

Its from 2-11pm and is in Farnham which is roughly 24 miles away.

We will be caring for 10 children (coming and going) aged up to 13yrs. They have offered to pay for petrol but we have know idea how to charge, im guessing per mile, but how much?

We also dont know how much to charge, for us both, for this type of childcare.

Any advice would be great, thanks!!

gosh..i would say A LOT!

10 hours of your time, including travel time. multiplied by your rate per child, multiplied by the number of children. 5 children each. plus an element of unsocial pay, perhaps an additional 50% after 6pm? or 9pm? see how that works out then round it to a decent figure that takes into account at some points you won't have all the children.

how old are these children? are you going to be putting babies to bed?

i did this once. it was for 3 children and was from 7am till 11pm.

i charged £120 (derbyshire area)

i would definately say £400. it will be hard work for you both!!

there are some companies who do this - have a look on the net to see if you can get any prices of what they would charge

I would have said a min. of £10ph each, plus milage charged at either 40p per mile or travel time at £10ph - whichever worked out to be more. (One Mum I worked for once paid me half pay for the travel time, plus 40p per mile on top of that).

Sounds like the cost will be split between quite a few families so cost per family wont be too bad. Make sure you get an amount you are happy with.

£150 each

as you are cm's can you have 10 children between yourselves? ie are there more than 3 under 5 per cm - or does it not make a difference as not in your own home?

when my friend and i do weddings we charge a min of £10ph each so for those hours we would charge £90 each, often familys round it up, so i would say £200 between yourselves

tbh i think it is a bit cheeky to ask for mileage going there, but if they have offered then fair enough - mileage is 40p mile so would be £9.60 each way - so would be roughly the same as i charge if that makes sense

i do charge travelling time, so that would be an extra £20 (hr each way)

How much will you insurance be?

Will you need public liability insurance too?

Do you plan to have a separate contract for each child?

Who will be responsible for first aid?

Is there outdoor space you can use?

I think you might need advise from NannyNick - he has such info on interpreting rules & regs

I would say a total of £300, this works out £30 per child so is very reasonable and a fair amount split between the 2 of you.

KatyMac · 25/03/2009 16:15

Do make sure you are insured it isn't always straight forward

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2009 11:03

other thing to consider - yes they are coming and going but what happens if you have all 10 children at once and then something happens to one child, and one of you needs to go and find parents

that will mean one of you will be left alone with possibly 10 children

i would prob find another friend who can come with you, so there are 3 of you

most my friend and i have had are 6 between us - when there was 8 in one wedding party we said to the bride that we needed 3 of us
