Say you had capacity for 3 children - Herts, just outside London. Could work pre school, after school every day and during school day up to 4 days per week plus holidays. What is the earning potential?

Well that depends

If completely full and assuming a rate of £3.50 per hour then .....

Amount paid £378 pw
Amount of profit £226 pw
amount of wages £158 pw after tax

I take in over £700 a week from being open all hours and that includes over nights and weekends. I am also accredited (can give 3+4 year olds free education) and a community childminder (like an emergency foster home). Sometimes there is one child in the house and sometimes 7.

Unless incredibly lucky, you will take months to get decently full and people will constantly come and go and many are only part time.

But perhaps whatyou haen't realised is all the time spent on paperwork and courses ontop of the hours you have a mindee present in your house.

pennies!
Enough to pay for shopping and a few bills and that's about it. It's only worthwhile to me so that I don't pay for childcare for my own DCs.
Think you have to love it and work very very hard to make a living from it.
We're definately undervalued and underpaid!

Depends where in Herts.Hourly rate can vary drastically, according to supply and demand. Demand is very high where I am.

In AL1 most childminders charge a minimum of £5 an hour, but all my new minders are charging £6 and hour.

A full day might be reduced to £5 a day, so £250 a week if you are feeling benevolent, x the number of children, 3 under 5 = £750 a week gross, plus any schoolies,
Before school, most charge £10 and after school school minimum £10 up to £25 could be up to £1000 a week, not unheard of on my network.

The longer you have been minding, the higher your profit as you do not have so many capital expenses, you have all the equipment, just need to renew every so often.

Costs have gone up on my account by around 25% on last year, but my profit is the same as I am charging more.

There are more people looking than there are spaces. I have had 12 enquiries in the last week, colleagues likewise.
Last night at some training I out on, 25 childminders and not one had a vacancy, even for one day
