I've been interviewing all week and have it wittled down to 3 candidates. I click with all 3 and they haven't said anything to put me off.

A - Very flexible, lives locally, keen and enthusiastic, happy with a lower rate of pay
but, can only commit for 6 mths, has no childcare related qualification, is younger (nearly 19)

B - also very flexible, good references, experienced, qualified, fun and thoughtful, can commit long term
but, wants more than we can pay (am hoping to neg somwehere in between), liver further away, does something unusual in spare time

C - experienced, comitted long term, lives locally, is bubbly and organised, tons of common sense, crb checked and has first aid cert.
but, also wants more money, less flexible than A&B (but still could work)

very confused by this...........how did others make the big decision???

Or someone with a BTEC National Diploma in Early Years childcare and Education.Level 3.

conniedescending · 17/03/2009 12:17

double arse

D has emailed me 15mins before she was supposed to be here to say she's not coming. I only spoke to her yesterday FFS.

now I'm left with C who I don't think will accept the job and I need to know this week or A who I'm coming back to again and again but the 6mth thing is bugging me.

not sure what to do

Bummer.

Supernanny19 · 17/03/2009 12:24

Whats your job description Connie?

Ebb · 17/03/2009 12:26

People who do that really annoy me. It gives nannies a bad name.

Where are you based Connie? Have you put an ad on nannyjob.co.uk also childcare.co.uk? There seems to be a real shortage of jobs at the moment ( well in the wilts/glos area ) so I'm surprised you're not unindated. Would definately put an ad on here too as lots of nannies read it and may know of someone looking for a job.

conniedescending · 17/03/2009 13:27

job description is:

8.30am start
school run, plan activities for the younger 2 in AM e.g. playgroup, park, craft, etc,

prepare lunch (something light not a full meal), put them down for a nap

collect other 2 from school,

after school snack and then another activity of some description e.g play in the garden, crayoning, perhaps start homework with school aged ones.

I don't want any cleaning or laundry or chores other than tidy up after lunch and whatever toys have been gotten out.

finish at 5pm

Thats not unreasonable is it? Have just phoned a local nanny agency to check on salaries and we are offering mid-range for this area so not as low as I was thinking it may be either!

conniedescending · 17/03/2009 13:28

i'm east midlands based

Job sounds lovely. I would definately apply if I was in your direction. Nice hours, minimal nursery duties, nice age of children. Perhaps some nannies are put off by four children? Can't think of any other reason really. I hope you find someone soon. Good luck.

frannikin · 17/03/2009 13:46

That sounds great to me too. Maybe it's just a matter of time until your ideal candidate comes along? How urgent is it and could A be a temp option until you do find someone suitable?

PixiNanny · 17/03/2009 13:54

I'd definately contact you on that description Connie, so don't worry about that! The only reason I wouldn't is because I'm happy in my job now!

I hope you find the perfect person soon!

And on religion, as long as they don't try to impose their religion on your children then it would be okay, and as long as they are comfortable with other religions. I'm really open, as are my host family and when I've discussed my beliefs (polytheism mostly, I'm not religious but beleive that one god cannot watch over everything) with the kids I make it clear that there are numerous religions, and they are free to their own beleifs even if they don't agree with mine. And when A comes home from school gushing about a Christian holiday they're celebrating we always discuss others that are happening soon, like my (or Iranian should I say!) New Year which is on Friday, I'm going to see if they fancy learning a little about it! Though her school is very open about multiple faiths, which is nice

Chellesgirl · 17/03/2009 14:05

connie, as a nanny i'd expect to be paid about £6.00hr for these duties, as well as petrol supplement if required.

I think some nanny's out there think they should be paid some real high price.

Your description sounds inviting, shame im in West mids.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/03/2009 14:32

bugger again for you connie

what excuse reason did d give for cancelling?

i still wouldnt go for a or b as you have your doubts, and esp a, as you will be doing this all again in 6mths time

erm

and yes your ad sems fine, wouldnt put me off - LOVELY hours

conniedescending · 17/03/2009 14:50

thanks - glad to hear the job sounds ok. I know there's 4 but they're good kids and none of them were awkward sods at the interviews. My mum said my cluttered house may be putting them off but the only saw the living room which is clutter free and clean so don't think it's that.

I'm looking to pay £7-7.50 an hr and this agency said £6 -£9 was appropriate so maybe the salary is ok.

Have now registered with an agency who has assured me they can find someone super. We shall see!!

OP posts:
RachieB · 17/03/2009 14:50

thats a shame

hope you find someone else soon, job sounds lovely

when do you need someone by?

conniedescending · 17/03/2009 14:53

oh and the reason D cancelled was apparently because another mother needed emergency childcare someone she babysits for occasionally.

OP posts:
conniedescending · 17/03/2009 14:54

Well i did need by start of April but DH taken annual leave now because we havn't got anything sorted so looking after Easter now.

Chellesgirl · 17/03/2009 14:54

Chellesgirl · 17/03/2009 15:07

For you to look at Connie.

nanny 1

nanny 2

nanny 3

5starjo · 17/03/2009 18:27

Hi Connie

I`ve just read your post.

Are you leicestershire, advertised on gumtree and with notts nannies now?

I am a nanny, and may well know of a great nanny who may be interested if you are looking for around 40hrs. (the add on gumtree is only 2 days so might not be you).

Please post again if you are in Leicestershire and want me to contact you with details.

If I am completely off the mark, good luck with your search.

Just a thought, the salary that the agency have quoted will be £6 for un/newly qualified nanny/mothers help for a first post - you will pay more for all added quals and experience (and this is what the nanny takes home after you have also paid the tax and ins).

lindseyfox · 17/03/2009 18:40

In the east midlands (I am leicestershire) you would be looking to pay £5 net an hr for a newly qualified/little experience nanny upto £10 net an hr for a very very qualified and experienced nanny (such as a teacher/nurse/nanny whose been doing it for 12yr plus).

Not that many nannies in the east midlands (good ones anyway) from what I hear from parents.

I nanny ad-hoc doing nights, eves and weekends and often get parents asking me if I would/could do days and they cant find anyone suitable!!

I can recommend www.kidsmatter.uk.com if you want to use an agency.

5starjo · 17/03/2009 18:51

OI !!!

I am a great nanny, I hope that you weren`t including me Lindsey?!!

Although I do agree that there are not many of us around.

I`m sure that Connie will know when she meets the right nanny for her, out of the nannies that I know, I can count on one hand the ones that I would employ.

lindseyfox · 18/03/2009 16:59

of course you are a great nanny jo just not too many around in east midlands as many parents want experienced nannies and def not many of them around.

agree about the counting on one hand nannies I would employ.

has your friend found a job (i did email the lady her details - we spoke via pm on nanny job the other week)

5starjo · 18/03/2009 18:25

Hi Lindsey. I hope that you realise my comment was tongue in cheek?!!

Thanks. They are now in touch so the rest is up to them. S has an interview with another family tomorrow night, so I`ll let you know when there is any news.

lindseyfox · 18/03/2009 19:56

Yep Jo, with me being the queen of sarcasim i certainly did realise.

good luck to your friend and lets hope connie finds a fab nanny also.

letswiggle · 18/03/2009 20:42

We had a JW nanny. I told her that we were a secular household and religion should not ever be mentioned in front of the children. I don't think she ever raised it, because none of them have ever mentioned it at all, even though I have prompted them to from time to time just to check. It did make me a bit paranoid though.
