Sorry - totally off topic, but I remember a couple of years ago you gave someone an idiots guide to potty training and I said at the time, "I'll ask you when DD is ready. ". I can't find the thread anywhere, so can you give me some pointers please?

DD is now 2.10 and doesn't give toss when her nappy is wet or dirty, but she does love sitting on the toilet and is enamoured by the thought of 'big girl pants like Mummy', so I've told her that when we get back from holiday (we're off to Devon next week) that she can start using the toilet/potty and wear her pants.

So, can you please help me with an idiot's guide, ie, Day One: do this every x-minutes.....

TIA m'love.

So - how did it go?

Apart from the fact that the nursery manager failed to spot the large red bag with DD's name printed on it hanging on her peg, and therefore put her in spare nursery clothes - it went OK.

3 accidents - one of which was her getting her dress caught under her bottom when she got on the loo, and another of which was getting off the loo too soon when she went to do a poo - so only one 'real' accident (oh and one when we got home because I was too busy haranguing DS to get his own stuff out of the car to get DD into the house fast enough )

LilRedWG · 24/04/2009 10:15

Bless her! She's doing great.

She's not going to be pleased with me when I put her in pull-ups for most of the weekend but I really can't deal with accidents at family gathering or in the car.

To make up for it, the pull-ups have Bob the Builder on them (which causes a full rendition of the song every time )

How is your DD doing - are you "on a break"?

LilRedWG · 24/04/2009 13:57

She has tonsillitis, so definitely on a break this week. I'll try again in a week or two. She has proved she can do it, but just prefers nappies. Nothing works - she likes her nappies and that's it. I just keep reminding myself that she won't be in nappies when she's 12 (I hope)!

Nursery. Peer pressure. It worked wonders with DS!

LilRedWG · 24/04/2009 14:37

Nope! Nursery are bigging it up. I may send her next week with pants and many clothes and get them to do it for me, then if she does it just tell her NO nappies at home either.

It took me four hours to get antibiotics down her the other day - she took them straight off key worker at nursery today - she will do ANYTHING for her.

DD's nursery carers maintain that they are all completely different children when at nursery. Apparently, DD doesn't hurl herself to the floor wailing whenever someone says 'no' to her at nursery

LilRedWG · 27/04/2009 11:35

It's amazing isn't it. Little blighters.

I casually asked DD this morning (whilst she was in the bath) if she wanted to wear pants or nappies to nursery today. She said pants, so after her bath she put a pair of pants on and in the half an hour before we left for nursery, she took herself to the toilet and had a wee TWICE!

We have a couple of longish car journies tomorrow for which I bought some pull-ups, but other than that I think she has finally decided to do it (hopefully)!

Third time lucky and all that?

looks like there's some great advice on here so i'm adding a post from me in the hope that i'll find this thread when i need it in a few months time

as you were ladies!

ps well done to LilRed's DD sounds like she's doing really well

LilRedWG · 11/05/2009 11:59

Well, we she got through lots of pants at nursery that first day and we used nappies/pull-up the next day for all the car journies/bbqs etc.

Since then she has been a superstar and takes herself off to the toilet/potty as and when needed for wees. Poos are another matter and she hasn't clicked on that one yet, so it's a bit messy so far.

Hooray! Well done miniRed.

I don't know what to advise about poos - DD started doing them on the loo after a phase of pooing in the bath - a few months before we did big girl pants. Any joy in catching her at the right moment (when you can spot the signs) and suggesting a wee - then you could make a huge fuss if she does poo...?

LilRedWG · 11/05/2009 14:05

Trouble is I'm not sure if her longterm medication (Movicol) for consipation is coming into play here or if she's just not quite there yet iyswim.

Have a GP appointment for her for next week - will ask doc's opinion then.

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 11/05/2009 14:09

I did wonder whether that might be a factor - hope the GP can shed some light.

LilRedWG · 11/05/2009 22:39

A very proud little girl did a poo in her potty earlier - I'm hoping she has it cracked!

Shoshe - not sure if you're still around, but thought I'd let you know I've hunted this thread out to train DS. Grin

Another trick if you want them to wear pull ups on car trips put the big girl/boy pants on and then the pull ups on the top so if they do have an accident they will feel wet but the car seat will be ok, some parents of children I have looked after also call the pull ups 'travelling pants' as the children would wear them when out and about and not near toilets (try and get different ones to the ones you use at night time )
Good luck

LilRedWG · 05/02/2014 13:24

That's such a good idea! Thanks. xx
