i have got by with childminders and nurseries for my 2 little monkeys so far, but in august am starting a new job with far greater hrs and responsibilities, so feel a nanny is the only way forward. We'll be moving to the Channel Islands for this job and I'll be working 4 days a week, long days, so will need help 8 til 8 those 4 days. My 4 year old will be starting school and my baby will just have turned one. Having not gone down this route before, i have no idea what my options are and where to start finding the right person for us ! Help !

I think there is some kind of Nanny Association in the Channel Islands. I suspect that there may be several things different about employing a nanny in the Channel Islands, than in England. For example, Employment Law and Tax Law are different.

Found it... Jersey Child Care Trust. They have a List of Available Nannies (Note: They are not recommending these nannies, have not background checked them etc... With regard to this list, JCCT just act as an information provider.)

They have done a Survey recently, average pay for a nanny in Jersey is £9.15. See Childcare Fee Survey 2009

If you will be living on Guernsey, then I'm not sure about who can help you... but probably worth asking JCCT, as they may well know.

Which island are you moving to? I worked on Guernsey for 4 years, loved every minute of it but there are no nanny agencies there.

There are not any agencies on any of the other smaller islands either so you will either have to recruit on the main-land or put adverts in the local papers.

There are restrictions for people working on the Islands. Different restrictions for Jersey and Guernsey (including Sark and Herm) I am not sure about Alderney. They don't just let anyone in unfortunately or I would still be there!!!

Hi

I live in Guernsey and thought I would just give you local contacts that I can as they might help.

This link will take you to the childminders listed in the current phone book

www.surecw.com/guernsey/directory/azclassifieds.asp?refererKey=77334877848&action=getEntr ies4Cat&cat=CHILDMINDERS

It can be hard to find a nanny in Guernsey as there is no agency and people generally rely on putting an ad in the local paper (The Guernsey Press- which everyone reads!)

Also, I work as a teaching assistant but in the school holidays offer childminding activities for school aged children - if this is something you may be interested in then feel free to drop me an email at [email protected]
