Please can someone help me...i have started a goverment based training course which i have done for 2 wks now. My dilema is that my mother helped me with my son whilst i was away at the course as its generally live-in, now she has changed her mind. I have no-one to help. I am a single parent and if i cannot find anyone to help take my son to school and pick up i have to give up the course ...leading to no job! It was my 40th birthday yesterday and my family completely snubbed me cause they disagree with what im doing. This is a great career move that i have never had before so i need to do it. I have decided not to live-in but to travel the 100 mile each way trip as i have no other choice. So this would mean someone either sleeping here to take over when i leave at 6am and taking my son to school and collecting him later, untill i get home. Has anyone got any help or what should i do. I have tried talking to my family but they dont want to know.

call some local nanny agencies to see if they have someone

Or call local childminders (google it and u should have some links) and see if any will start at 6am!

KatyMac · 22/02/2009 11:27

& ring childminders even if they say they don't open til 7 or 8 as often for 4 weeks they won't mind

Happymuppet · 22/02/2009 11:35

Thing is i dont have 'Nanny' kind of money at the moment. They cost about £250- 300 a week i just dont have that spare in my bank. Sat here sobbing...dont know what to do.

I am in the same situation, need to work from 7am to 7pm and sometimes from 7pm to 7 am. I don't know what is best? Childminder or a live-in nanny? I can't imagine my child sleeping in someone else's house. How would she feel? Sorry not much help

niakov · 22/02/2009 11:37

Yes nanny cost a lot but I think if it's a live-in nanny could be better. I went to an agency recently where they help single parents go back to work and my adviser said I could pay £100 per week.

nannyL · 22/02/2009 11:38

what about an au pair?

niakov · 22/02/2009 11:38

£100 pounds per week for a live-in nanny I mean. Do you have a spare room?

LoveMyGirls · 22/02/2009 11:39

Why would your mum help you for 2 weeks then change her mind knowing you had no one else to help?

Have you got any friends who could help you out as its for such a short time?

niakov · 22/02/2009 11:39

yes an au pair is also good and you pay them like 60 pounds per week but they are not qualified, s got to be careful. I don't know where to look for one. Do you?

Happymuppet · 22/02/2009 11:39

Yes this is the worry too. My son is very shy and i dont want just anyone. My friends have said oh yes if you need anything...so i have mentioned the problem and they have just said lets see what happens. I have today to get this sorted. So i cannot just wait and see. I know a childminder who takes the kids to school but my son cant surely just be dumped there at 6 in the morning. I will never forgive my family for this. I have tried so hard to get this job and now look where i am.

They need to start tommorow morning so can i get someone on a sunday? My mother has listened to my sad sister who has talked to her because she is jealous of me and what im doing. So my mother has turned against me too now saying that im not thinking of my son etc and putting career first. The only reason why i have gone for this job is to better myself for my son and our finances and future. I really dont want to give it up.

I haven't started my job yet I have like two months until then, could help you but I live in Bermondsey SE London.

nannyL · 22/02/2009 11:44

i dont know any nannies who would work for £100 a week!

I think you need to multiply the cost by 3 or even 4 or more!

niakov · 22/02/2009 11:48

well it's a live-in position. And she only needs to work like two days a week or two nights a week.

Scarfmaker · 22/02/2009 11:51

How long is your course for? Don't be too hard on your mum/family - maybe she just didn't realise how hard it was going to be for her - getting someone to sleep over every night is quite a lot to ask when you've got your own family and other things to do!

I think it will be hard for you to find a childminder who starts at 6am plus your son will feel really tired during the day at school. Sorry to be a bit negative but the only other option as you say is to find a live-in nanny/aupair.

nbee84 · 22/02/2009 11:51

I think you are going to need to ring friends and beg favours. An au pair would work for that money but you are not going to find one to start tomorrow - maybe next week if you're lucky. But you also need to find one that wants a very short term position if it's only for the next 4 weeks.

Sorry, not much help I know - but I suggest you start calling your friends - or have a heart to heart with your Mum if she will listen to you.

Supernanny19 · 22/02/2009 11:51

what are you looking for in a nanny?

Happymuppet · 22/02/2009 11:52

ok thanks for your advice going to go do some searching. x

nannyL · 22/02/2009 12:02

have a look on your local gumtree

but check references very VERY carefully

do you know any nannies who only do a 4 day week?

(I do a 4 day week and tbh most of my nanny friends do 4 days, and i would be happy to do a 5 day week as a one off, for 4 weeks in a row!... and most of my friends would not mind doing it as a 1 (or 4) off type thing either)

not sure you will find someone for tomorrow though

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2009 12:04

i cant believe that your family have snubbed you for trying to better yourself, get a better education and a job and better fututr for your son

does your son not have any school friends who you can talk to their mum and see if they could help out by having your son for sleepovers or to drop off at 6am

it is not ideal but it is only for 4 weeks and not forever

other option is you can try nanny agencies, maybe there are some nannies who are out of work and will come and stay in your house for a week - £100 is very low, but for some nannies some money is bstter than no money iykwim

PersephoneSnape · 22/02/2009 13:14

SillyMillysMummy · 22/02/2009 13:20

have you tried the emergency childcare website?

henrys7thwife · 22/02/2009 20:27

Happy, I know a nanny who may be able to help you out for at least 2 weeks, please email me on [email protected] if you still need someone. Happy to give a great reference.
