I have been interviewing and interviewing.
I am not wildly picky - I just want someone sane, warm, calm, friendly and capable who is not off travelling in 6 months and is not an alcoholic (last nanny) - but the people I am getting through Gumtree are just not experienced enough or right. I think I have seen about 15 people.I've signed with an agency and they sent me the same people who applied through gumtree.

I've decided to extend the hours to 9-7 even though my children are at school. I've thought of housekeeping the nanny can do during the day, but it's probably only about 3 hours a day, so basically unless it's holidays or the kids are ill, the nanny would get paid for 3 hours a day for doing nothing. And STILL I'm not getting good enough people.

Are you there? Do you know someone who is there? I am getting increasingly desperate - am WILDLY behind with work.

We are nice! My kids are nice!My house is nice!

Have you had a look on Nannyjob.co.uk?
It will be a lot of the nannies from gumtree but its another option.

I like it how your first requirement is "someone sane" - this implies that so far the candidates have been far from sane!

Hours: How about 8am-6pm? Could that perhaps appeal more, rather than 9-7? Nanny then still gets all the evening to themselves.

Alas paying nanny while your children are at school is quite typical. After all you need the nanny when children are ill, on school holidays etc. Nanny does get time to do some housework though - so your kitchen should be tidy most of the time.

I would also suggest using NannyJob rather than gumtree. State clearly in adverts your requirements, so you can short-list candidates who meet those requirements. For example, if you need to part-pay using Childcare Vouchers, then you need a registered nanny. Also put a salary figure on the advert - I don't apply for jobs where there is no salary listed.
If you are prepared to accept a nanny with their own child... then state that on the advert.

I don't know anyone in your are, but Good Luck finding someone.

You could also review your advert to see if you are selling your family well enough. Possibly you are, but check what others are doing on Gumtree, how they are describing the job, including photos of family in some cases etc. If you haven't done so already, make your add sound friendly rather than just a long list of requirements. And yes I think nannyjob is a good alternative source. Gumtree can be a matter of luck - I had good candidates applying first time round on Gumtree but when I advertised for second nanny the applicants were disappointing. Possibly the age of your children might affect popularity of the job - I understand many nannies prefer to look after babies.

Have you tried the local college for those nursery nurses doing evening nvq classes maybe one of them is looking for their first nanny job.

AtheneNoctua · 24/02/2009 20:04

You could pinch an underpaid nursery nurse from Teddies. Out of curiosity, what school? I have a nanny and kids go to school in Twickers. She might know someone. I could ask her. If you want to know which school, CAT me.

I would NEVER pay for a full time nanny when kids are in full time school. Those are probably famous last words. But, hey ho... I better not be doing this for many more years to come.

Are you looking for live-in or live-out?

Hi toomany daves,

I am based in Teddington and offer Mothers help.

I am not sure if this would appeal to you but it I would be availble to give you a hand until you perhaps get a more full time nanny.

I am a mother with over 11 years experience and have references available.

Typically I would collect from school and look after until you would arrive home and/or do the morning drop off.

I am very experienced in all ages and know the area very well.

Please contact me on rockylex at hotmail dot co dot uk if you think I maybe a temporary option.

I charge £10 per hour and have a full UK driving license.

Thanks!
Clare
