Are you doing her tax yourself or using a payroll company? Do you know her tax code?

Sounds like you've got a very cheap nanny btw!

tankie · 05/02/2009 22:05

Nannytax calculator www.nannytax.co.uk/parents/calculator.html

£300 a week net looks to be around £420 gross.

Tiramissu · 05/02/2009 22:53

What a bargain !

nannynick · 05/02/2009 22:56

Keep putting figures into www.listentotaxman.com, then you can get a close figure.
You may want to use a payroll agencie, they seem to do it. Would love to know how its calculated, expect there is some kind of formula.

SAMS73 · 06/02/2009 17:43

didnot realise that it was cheap tbh.btw we r not in London.Nannynic/tankie thanks look like Ihave figured it out/

It may not be cheap for where you are I guess - I'm not in London and not on a big wage but my net is something like £7.30.

NAB09 · 06/02/2009 18:11

Why at £6 an hour?

SAMS73 · 06/02/2009 21:52

didnt mean for the wage, meant to be for agreeing for the net as the consistent adv was for gross to be agreed at the time of negotiation. We are first time employers and didnt have a clue and was let down by someone agreed to do the job at the last minute (4 weeks before I was due to start my job) so in desperation just agreed to whatever she said and that was what she asked. Was trying to do the wage the whole evening yesterday and was cross with myself as it would have been much simpler if I had agreed to the gross pay. Sorry long explanation.

£6 net is low

even i get £7 net here in south wales

nannynick · 07/02/2009 09:33

£6 net isn't that low... it is above NMW and is similar to, or even above what someone is likely to earn in a nursery.
It wasn't that long ago that I had a nanny job paying £14,700 per year, which when calculated hourly worked out around £7.32 an hour GROSS. If I was on that same salary now, using current tax rates, then it would equate to £6 NET per hour.
Ultimately it is up to the employee and the employer concerned to agree on the wage. £6 net is what they have agreed.

SAMS73 - use a payroll company to do the payroll. They will use software like Sage Payroll which will do all the calculations. Typically a payroll company will charge £100-£150 per year. PAYEforNannies seems quite good and towards the bottom of the cost range.

NAB09 · 07/02/2009 13:26

I still don't understand why you are sad.

compo · 07/02/2009 13:29

I think the op used the face because she'd agreed a net rate so had to work out the tax herself?

SAMS73 · 07/02/2009 13:48

thats right compo. Not sad about the money I am going to pay her as I was prepared to pay even higher rate if I found the right person as it was for looking after my children. She was perfect in all respects and we agreed to what she asked and she suggested the net pay of 6/hour. Thanks Nannynick for all you valuable adv.

£6 net is not low, it really depends where OP is.
