Daft question about holidays and nannies

Thinking about doing a nanny share but the friend we are planning on doing it with has just raised an interesting question about holidays - if we nanny share do we all have to take holidays when the nanny wants leave? If you just have a nanny to yourself do you dictate leave or does your nanny?

Sorry if this sounds like a daft question but just don't know anything about all this!

With one employer, normally holiday is split 2 weeks nanny's choice, two weeks parent's choice.

With a share I would suggest two weeks nanny choice, one week each parent's choice.

It is not a daft question, is a very good question.

I have done many nannyshares for years (i mean as a nanny, before my children) and yes it is exactly as Tankie said.

Although if one of the three parts has a very good reason for wanting to choose the hols of course you can bend the rules assuming that everything else goes well.

Thank you both, that's really helpful.

I didn't realise this was going to be such a minefield!

To complicate matters, holiday entitlement increases in April 09. Its quite a bit more than 4 weeks (5.8 weeks i think).

sorry to hijack, but Nannynick could you help re the increase in holiday - is this some new law or something? does it affect people other than nannies?

nannynick · 06/02/2009 20:09

BERR.gov.uk : Holiday Entitlement
It applies to ALL Employees - from April 09, it is 5.6 weeks holiday entitlement.
If you already receive paid time off for bank holidays in addition to your 20 days holiday entitlement your holiday entitlement has not increased. This is because the new entitlement can include bank holidays.

Holiday Calculator - this should be used to calculate how much holiday your employee gets. Particularly useful for part-time employees (especially those who don't work a Monday) as a lot of Bank Holidays are Mondays.

Thanks Nannynick
