i had a temporary nanny for 2 weeks - not live in, but I can't see why a nanny wouldn't lodge in your spare room for the week. Where do you live? Mine cost around £70 a day (I think). The agency I used had nannies who would work part time too (eg a few hours a day).

You should certainly be able to get a short term nanny - I have used them on many occasions, including just after ds2's birth. Call round your local nanny agencies - I can recommend one in South London. Have always done live out personally, but even there they can be prepared to do long day (7-7 or 7-8), which may be what you need. The usual price here is £8 per hour mid week, £9 per hour for weekend, With a £30-40 charge to the agency for the week.

How soon is this course? Might want to check out nannyjob.co.uk. You could even post on the chat thread. There might be someone in your area who is either between jobs or would gladly fill in some part time hours (if she works part time).

What about a babysitter in the area. If your mum is going to be there it doesn't sound like you really need to pay for a qualified nanny.

Maybe also post this question on the special needs section of MN. There may be some other parents of Austistic child(ren) who could advise what they've done if they've been in similar situation.

There are lots of ads on Gumtree for short term nannies. You'd have to do your own reference checks, but most nannies come with CRB checks etc., and they are already in the UK giving you the opportunity to interview them.

Places like Bupa Childcare are very used to finding nannies at short notice.

Actually one should always be able to get a nanny @ very short notice it all come down to cost & affordability, sometimes high rates required if a nanny need to come from a distance a way
