if nanny doesn't come because of snow

If our nanny doesn't come because of snow, do we count this as annual leave, unpaid leave, toil or just one of those things? We are not able to get to work, but can work from home if she comes, if not, one of us will have to take annual leave. Anyone know the answer? Don't want her to put herself at risk though or be harsh employer

So long as you contact her and agree it upfront it is fine. I always try to treat nannies int he same way that I get treated, so if you have to take a days annual leave because you can't get in, then reasonable for nanny to do same.

last time it snowed i couldnt get into work for 3 days,and i got paid

would be very insulted if i didnt get paid -sure your company pays you

it is not that your nanny wont, its that she cant!!

If I don't get to work because of adverse weather/no trains etc I have to take it as holiday (or unpaid leave if not enough holiday left).
Having said that, I would probably pay nanny if she couldn't get to work, just because the relationship is closer than the organisation I work for and me (and because I spent most of today listening to colleagues who are very upset that they spent a few hours trudging to different stations in the snow, finally gave up, and now have been reminded that they have to take the day as holiday).

I feel it's up to the employer and employee to negotiate what happens in this sort of circumstance. Having the day an annual leave is certainly an option. Could call it a sick day.
However you shouldn't let an employee take advantage of the situation. Having one day off may be acceptable... but for the following day they should have made suitable arrangements for getting to work, given that at that point they knew what problems to expect.

I was off on tues and today, due to the snow

i probably COULD have gotten in ( cars were just about managing to get out of my hill) ,but my boys were off school and i didnt want to risk driving in the snow either !

MB and Db working from home so didnt feel too bad!

i wont get paid though

I think the least you should do is whatever your employer would do for you in that situation - so if you would be paid, pay your nanny, if you would have to take it as leave, do that.

But as Millarkie says, if you value your nanny, and trust that she would have come in if she could, then I would pay her.

i've had to take today off as DS's nursery was closed as the staff (most of whom normally seem to walk in anyway) couldn't get there

Choufleur - even if lots of the staff usually walk in, just having the drivers/bus takers not get in means you can't open as you're under ratios. I had the day off today so helped out at the nursery up my road, and we were having to turn "non-emergency" children away and warn parents that they were on standby and if we had to shut they'd have to come and get their DC early. The cook couldn't come in so one of the nursery nurses had to cook and wasn't included in ratios, a pipe burst so one room was out of use, there was no hot water - total nightmare. And one parent still reduced a nursery nurse to tears because she was a VERY BUSY IMPORTANT PERSON and if she could get their then the staff should have too.

Grrr! I hate it when people say that they are more IMPORTANT than yourself. I hope that Nursery nurse did not take it too much to heart
Our pre-school has been closed since Tuesay as we had some snow, then it froze and did not melt all day and then today we had 7inches of snow!
You've guessed it, it will be closed tomorrow as well.
We are wondering what to do with the staff wages, we will still pay them as its not their fault the school is closed due to Health and Safety.
But the parents who pay the full session fees will need to be refunded for the amount they would have got IF they were claiming Nursery education grant.
Do you think that is fair?

Ripeberry - this mother has had a run in with almost every member of nursery staff - she's a bit "high needs" . But really, of all the people you could be angry about regarding bad weather and nurseries shutting (the staff that didn't get in, the nursery manager, God...) why take it out on the girl who is actually there and you are handing your baby over to? I don't understand some people.

Save us from the "High needs" mothers .
The nursery manager should have a word with that parent to explain that they should not have a go at staff and that the manager should deal with this.
That's what they are paid to do.

If you're in charge you should see it as your responsibility to make the work environment so pleasant that your employees want to do their best to get there. Then you'll know they're not trying it on if they don't come in, but it really is impossible.

Thanks for your replies. Our nanny is really good and 100% reliable. She would have come in but I discouraged it as it just wasn't safe. So I would feel really bad if she has to take leave. But my dp will have to take one day TOIL/leave for today (I was able to work from home). I think we will put it down as half day leave or half TOIL or just write it off. (think it might be the latter). And don't worry- unpaid leave wouldn't really have been offered!

If she was prepared to come in, and you discouraged it, then she really should get paid imo.

I think she should get paid like a normal day, especially if she was prepared to come in.

Just to reassure you - whatever happens - she will get paid!!
And just to update, she made it today through thick snow. I was gobsmacked. So we will just count yesterday as normal day- not TOIL/AL or anything else. That kind of perseverence needs proper respect!!
