Live-Out Nannies and SNOW - Did your nanny arrive at work today?

nannynick · 02/02/2009 13:16

Today is my usual day off, so I'm lucky that I didn't have to drive to work. Tomorrow is another matter!

So I was wondering, did your Live-Out nanny arrive at work today?

I have cancelled my night nanny family for tonight. They live a half an hour drive away, some motorway and lots of small roads.

Baby is generally sleeping through now anyway which makes me feel a little better about cancelling. I'm still not happy though

HandbagAddiction · 02/02/2009 14:02

No - but then we texted her early enough to say 'please don't try to drive until the roads have cleared' and then rang her about half an hour later to say 'don't even try to come in'. We live in Godalming and it was pretty bad first thing this morning!

callalilies · 02/02/2009 14:03

Nope. We have very little snow here, but apparently she has a bit more...

To be fair, I'd asked her to swap and do today instead of tomorrow for my own convenience, so assuming weather is better she will do tomorrow instead.

Cantandwont · 02/02/2009 14:05

By an amazing stroke of luck, she asked last week if she could work Tues-Fri instead of Mon-Thurs this week, as I can't believe she'd have made it this morning. Am trying to decide what to do tomorrow - the roads won't be dangerous (central London, I think they're mostly fairly clear of snow) but the traffic is bound to be dreadful. On the other hand, I have to work tomorrow as have a looming deadline - can just about manage to do a small amount with ds around but impossible with dd too, and her school is closed today and likely to remain so tomorrow.

Sam100 · 02/02/2009 14:05

No - she lives on steep hill and could not get her car out, she called and said she was going to walk (1.5 miles) but i said not to.

beforesunrise · 02/02/2009 14:05

i don't go to work on mondays and tomorrow is my first day back after mat leave- i have rung my nanny to tell her that if tomorrow is anything like today i shall not be expecting her, and have already told my boss that i am likely not to go in either. it's crazy!

nannynick · 02/02/2009 14:38

I have an 8 mile journey in the morning through Surrey villages. Not looking forward to that... hope the grit lorries have been out and about. May have to go via the local A road instead... will take longer, distance further, but that will have been gritted.

i dont work on a monday so not at work

will get there tomorrow i expect as i only drive on 3 main roads and even at 4am, today my main road, was clear... but then it is a main main road!

dont want to do the 10mile school run in the morning though! would prefer to have a day at home building snowmen!

tankie · 02/02/2009 19:01

I can walk to work, and I walk the older ones to school, so no excuse for not coming in tomorrow!

FantasticMissFox · 02/02/2009 19:42

I went to work today! Mostly main roads but driving was a bit scary because it was my first time driving in the snow!

fridayschild · 02/02/2009 19:55

Yes. She sent a text at 7.15am to say she was leaving (30 mins early) and would be with us as soon as she could. Normally she can walk to us in 45 mins.It took her 1.5 hours.

DH and I both tried and failed to get to work - no public transport and we both slipped and fell on our bikes before giving up and coming home -so I took a day holiday and we sent her home at 9.30am.

fairimum · 02/02/2009 20:10

I got a call to say come a bit later, got to 10 and traffic still at a standstill so left anyway, took over an hour to get there and then left early at 3!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/02/2009 20:17

already here as staying here why parents away

but yes i could have got to work, but def couldnt have got home

we are snowed in

naturopath · 02/02/2009 20:31

yes, mine came. Lots of snow here, but she is v committed.

needahand · 02/02/2009 20:37

I expect mine won't turn up tomorrow. I had to come back from work on the most important day of the year last week because she had a headache! So with a bit of snow no chance

catepilarr · 02/02/2009 21:43

cant help wondering why is snow such a disaster in this country

tankie · 02/02/2009 22:28

I feel a bit mean but I REALLY hope my charges school is open tomorrow so I don't have all three at home tomorrow

nannynick · 03/02/2009 06:56

catepilar - we aren't used to snow, it doesn't happen that often, especially not this quantity. I've been in the US with 3 feet+ of snow and things just keep going... they have snow ploughs.

Just finishing breakfast, then it's time to go outside and desnow/deice the car.

Think about us childminders!
Kiddies walked 50 mins to me, then parents go home as they are both off today. I appreciate they have paid me, but the chance to spend a day in the snow with a 2 yr old obviously has no attraction.

pinkdelight · 03/02/2009 12:47

Bradformum, that's just the kind of judgement that I was worried my CM would make when me and DH dropped ds off this morn, then sadly trudged back through the snow to work from home all day, being unable to get into work. We comforted ourselves that:

a) She's a lovely person so hopefully wouldn't be so judgemental; and,

b) She's getting paid to look after him today and wouldn't refund the money if we kept him at home so she'd understand we wouldn't want to spend nearly 50 quid on nothing, however priceless a fun day with our ds may be.

Course you can have your opinion, but do you really think the parents who use you don't like spending time with their kids??

BradfordMum · 03/02/2009 13:11

Pink delight, Even 'lovely' people can be judgemental.

I also know for a fact that they'd rather send him to me than care for him.

He's also leaving me on friday, and I'm absolutely gutted. I am the only stability in his life at the moment, and from next week, he's having that taken away from him, together with all his pals.

I'm sat here in tears just thinking about it.

And yes, I AM entitled to my opinion.

tankie · 03/02/2009 19:08

I don't understand why you'd send your child to the childminder when you have a day off just cos you've paid

twinklytoes · 03/02/2009 19:39

its wasn't a day off though - it was a work from home day.

nannyL · 03/02/2009 20:26

i made it in to work today...

but was only about a mile on way on main roads!

foxinsocks · 03/02/2009 20:27

I drove my children to the nanny. I wouldn't expect her to drive on the roads if she didn't feel safe but I am a far more confident driver than she is so felt perfectly happy dropping the children off at her house (she was happy to have them there) but it did mean I had to drive in to work (probably quickest way of getting there today anyway!).
