I know that nannies cannot be self employed but you can if you are a maternity nanny, night nanny or a nanny in continuous temporary employment.

If I became a continuous temporary employed nanny to cover other nannies who are off sick for the day or for someone who needs a nanny for one day as a one off, for example. How would I pay my tax and NI?

you would just be se as i was when i was a temp nanny/mn

check with your local tax office, and get it in writing that you can be se

and go from there

i just saved 1/4 of what i earnt, and kept petrol/phone/clothes receipts etc and then did it all online

What do you call yourself ? When i talk to the tax office, the minute i say i am a nanny, they say i cant be self employed.

Also, what is the maximum number of days i can work for the same family before it is classed differently. For example could i cover someones two week holiday?

Say maternity and temporary nanny. Then tell them that maternity nannies are by their own definitions self employed.

You could cover a 2 week holiday. I don't know whether there's a maximum, or whether there's a proportion of your earnings that can only come from one job or something. There must be some way of doing it but I don't know.

i called myself a mn/temp nanny

i worked 3mths in one job so 2 weeks will be fine

just keep a diary of where you have been, milegae ,exspenses etc

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2009 18:43

forgot to say

sure there was 6mth rule that i read somewhere that, if job was longer than 6mths in one family, then that was then classed as a perm job, and you couldnt be a temp/se nanny for them

but cant find it now, so probably bollocks
