Course for nanny OFSTED registration in a weekend?

I'm currently interviewing candidates to be my DS's nanny. We need him/her to be OFSTED registered so that we can use childcare vouchers. One candidate I've met is a possible - I liked her and she has current first aid, CRB, experience but doesn't have a recognised qualification. However she has said that you can do a two day course which is sufficient for a nanny to register with OFSTED and she is happy to do this.

Is this really correct? I thought it had to be NVQ or something like that so assumed that if they don't have a qual now then we couldn't get them OFSTED registered. It would make life a lot easier as there are several nannies I'm interested in who have loads of experience but just not an official qual, but we need to use the vouchers to make it financially viable really.

I think that MNT training do such a course - www.mnttraining.co.uk. Having researched this myself when considering prospective nannies I believe OFSTED require either an minimum of NVQ level 2 in childcare or that the nanny has completed training in the 'common core skills'. The short 'weekend' type course your prospective nanny mentions would potentially cover the 'common core skills' required by OFSTED.

I did the 'common core skills' course through MNT. I have over 20 years experience as a nanny but no 'official' qualification.

My course was done on a Friday and Saturday but it can also be done by distance learning.

There is also a course called the ICP 'introduction to childcare practice' that all childminders do. When I did mine there were a number of nannies on the course who were doing it to register with Ofsted. The course was for 4 Saturdays.

Thanks, that's great. it's really good to know that they can do a short course to get registered as that gives me lots more possibles as nannies!

I think the relevant MNT training course is in fact the ICP 'introduction to childcare practice' course.

MNT do both a weekend ICP course, and a distance learning Common Core course.

I did the ICP course over a Fri and Sat - I have no formal qualification but this allowed me to register with Ofstead

MNT have a course in Kensington running next fri and sat altho no idea if there are any spaces left.

so if i sent my nanny on this course, would she be ofsted registered and i could use childcare vouchers with her?

Melinda76 · 28/01/2009 15:44

Yes as long as she fills the other criteria, e.g first aid, crb, insurance, then she will get a letter stating she has attended the ICP course - that is all that is required.
