Using ex-nanny for occasional cover? (Sorry long)

Hi, I posted a while back about having to let my p/t nanny go for financial reasons (makes sense that DH looks after DD as he is at home anyway and not working atm). However, I was gutted about it as our nanny is great and DD loves her...

However, I've since been promoted, with pay rise etc etc - which means I could actually afford to have her a couple of days a month (she hasn't found a job yet). (DH thinks we should just save the extra money and that DD will soon get used to not having her around, but I just feel it's sad!)

Anyway - I just wanted to check: if I used her occasionally (whenever DH has had enough!), whether that is one day this week, two days next week and no other days for the rest of the month, is that illegal, or similar to just having an occasional babysitter (in terms of NI/tax implications etc etc?)

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

Sounds like an occasional babysitter to me , that would be nice for your dd too, i guess on the proviso, once she finds a 'proper' job she could just do the odd evening..

i am not advising you not to pay her tax/ni as that is illegal but if you paid her cash then no one would know for the odd day

I go back and do occasional days for a lot of my families. I take holiday from my current position every March to go back to a position I left 7 years ago, it's part of my contract stipulations!!! As I am taking holiday, I am already getting paid by my current employers and I would do it for free, but I don't, they insist on paying me, which I think is nice, that they appreciate that I help them out. (I don't declare it)

I also do occasional weekends for various old families, it's not like work! I love seeing them, they love seeing me, I don't have to do nursery duties and we go out somewhere special. I look forward to it. Maybe I have no life!!!

I think she will be overjoyed to spend some time with your children and of course she will be glad of any extra money if she is not working. Of course, if she is earning below the tax threshold, you have no worries about paying tax.
