A childminder friend of mine has posted some piccies on facebook of various childminding meets/christmas parties etc and some of these photos have minded children in. I feel very uncomfortable with this but can only presume she has the parents permission. Then the other day i noticed she had posted some more up and 2 of my mindees were in the background of one of the pictures. I am cross but don't know what to do. I don't want to make a big fuss but when getting permission for photos I made a point of telling my parents that they were only for use in my setting and learning journeys and would never be put on the internet. As i said they are in the background not the main subject of the photograph. I don't want to kick up a fuss so probably won't say anything. I am just beginning to really get to know and make friends with other local cm so don't want to rock the boat. Am I being precious or do you think this is wrong too?

I would say it depends on her settings on facebook and who she has allowed to see them?

LucyTownsend · 20/01/2009 13:26

I would explain to your friend that your parents had specifically requested that any photos taken were not to be put on the internet and that you hope she understands and respects their wishes.

I would be a bit [hmmm] that she had put minded children pics of facebook anyway - not really an appropriate place for pics of kids that are not your own anyway.

Its wrong - but shift the blame to the parents so you dont come across as precious!

Well I have pics of certain mindees on facebook as the parents wanted to be able to grab them to put on their own profile. I got VERY annoyed when a received a formal complaint about this - turned out it was an internal Ofsted set up to get me in trouble because they'd seen us on Mumsnet trying to make a stand against them because of their inconsistancies etc. (that's a whole seperate story!). Anyway, the complaint was dropped when they saw I had permission to put them on there! So, I personally wouldn't do anything about her mindees being on their HOWEVER, I'm not so sure about your own mindees being on there. It's difficult isn't it as lots of children are in the background of normal everyday pics and as a parent it wouldn't bother me my kids being on there but it's different as you're a childminder. Sorry, not being much help, hopefully someone else can help you with the bit about your own minded children being on there.

X'd posts.

What Lucy said sounds good about your own minded children but I think it's a bit unfair to say it's wrong to put pics on of her own mindees as she may have been asked to like I was? But, maybe you could casually say 'oh, I know a childminder who got into trouble for putting pics on there, just thought I'd let you know in case you don't have permission to do so' - something like that so it sounds like you're trying to help her?

You need to approach her as a professional, and explain that your mindees' parents have not given media consent, and she needs to remove them ASAP- does not matter who can see her profile, private or not.

I would be very angry as a parent who had specifically not given media consent for my child's image.

I would never interfere regarding her own minded children, that's her business. I would hate for any of my parents to see a picture of their child on facebook whilst in my care iykwim. Depending on what security setting you have and what friends you may not realise you have in common, it is possible. Might bring it up in general chit chat and see what the reaction is. Thanks.

I would not like my cm to put photos up of my son on facebook as I do not know all her friends.
You definitley need tio talk to her about the ones with your mindees in and use the parents as an excuse if necessary
