Norland Nannies

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between this type of nanny and another qualified nanny? Presumed they were just different qualifications but someone mentioned to me they have different 'attitudes' than other nannies...can anyone shed some light?

Very expensive college - costs thousands a term. Quite traditional, wear uniforms and that kind of thing. A cut above us bog standard nannies

MY friend is a Norlander, has very traditional ways of doing things, old fashioned values and ideas, not in the frumpy sense, but the sort of things that upper class families expect.

Smocked dresses, romper suits, coach built prams, tea in the nursery, employed by Royal families world wide for excellent salaries and additional benefits.

Supposed to be, and are thought of as La Ceme de la creme

I had an 'aupair' whom I took on because she said she had a place next year to go to Norland.

She was awful.

I actually contacted Norland expressing my dismay that they would consider her to be a suitable candidate. Obviously they could see a spark that I couldn't. But if that is typical of the kind of person they take in to train then Norland has really gone down in my books.

She was so unsuited to being a nanny.

I am friends with several Norland nannies and they are brilliant nannies, well trained, enthusiastic and knowledgeable... They have excellent practice and I'm proud to call them my friends! I have yet to meet one who says they enjoyed the uniform but other than that...! This isnt to say that all Norlanders are brilliant - some arent, but the same goes for any group of nannies educated anywhere: some will be brilliant, some will be crap! Why judge someone for choosing the best education they feel is available to them? If they or their families feel it's worth he money then what's the problem?

AtheneNoctua · 19/01/2009 17:20

I would not hold the choice to go to Norland against someone. But, I would not get along with someone who came out of Norland and thought that because she went to Norland she was better than nannies who hadn't. And I'd tell her to take her silly uniform off before it gets dirty.

AtheneNoctua · 19/01/2009 17:27

Were those Chelsea buns?!?! What about my organic veg?!?! And why are the children not helping?!?!

tankie · 19/01/2009 18:30

Hot cross buns!

MissGT · 19/01/2009 20:43

I completely agree... most NN's dont wear the uniform to their actual job, only to college. The ones i know have commented that they simply WOULD not wear it to work, nor would they take a job where they were expected to wear it, for its sheer impracticality!

blueshoes · 19/01/2009 20:54

What happens when a NN gets married or have children of their own? Can't see how they can continue to travel the world with their jet-setting charges.

AtheneNoctua · 20/01/2009 10:16

Well, OF COURSE, they only marry men of certain well... class. so they won't need to worry about working. They will, however, be very well suited to managing the nanny since they have been one themselves. Only now they can sleep upstairs instead of downstairs.

Oh Hudson!

I wonder how many of the rich and famous relly hire Norland. I bet Diana was more of non-Norland kind of girl.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/01/2009 10:24

the unifirm is so umpractible - rem had to wear mine during out classes when we were learning how to bath a baby and chnage its nappy

now if they made it a different colour - red mybe - and allows trousers and blouses instead of that starchy dress - then would be better

blueshoes · 20/01/2009 10:29

I would imagine the real nobility, save for a lucky few on the civil list or born with brains, to be too improverished to hire a NN. More like rockstars and footballers, I would imagine.

LOL at marrying well - hopefully not the daddy boss. The ultimate exit strategy.
