We are about to take on our first full-time nanny and I have no idea how much holiday to offer. What's the normal annual amount? And after how long are they intitled to it? Also, if we go on holiday at a different time to her, do we still pay her? or is it reasonable to offer her half pay?

I'm self-employed so have no idea about this sort of stuff. The nanny we think we are getting is extremely assertive so I want to know my facts before we enter negotiations. Thanks in advance!

It is usually 4 weeks. Usually 2 weeks of the nanny's choice and 2 of the employers. It is full pay.

There is legislation with regard to Holiday Entitlement. More info

Use the calculator at BusinessLink.gov.uk

If the nanny works 5 days per week, in England, and starts the job on 1 Feb 2009, then they are entitled to 27.4 days holiday during year 1-Feb-09 to 1-Feb-10. This is just an example, please use the calculator above to work it out for your particular circumstances - the start date is important, as there is a change to the entitlement in April this year.

ACAS have a leaflet all about Holiday Entitlement, ACAS: Holiday Leaflet
As an employer, you are able to nominate particular days when you are 'closed' when your employee is expected to take annual leave - Eg over Christmas.

as others have said gen 4 weeks, both choose 2 weeks

i get 5 weeks in my contract, and all bank holidays, though my family tend to go away for 7/8 a year - these are paid

however if employers decide to go over their 2 weeks, then the nanny should be paid in full ( i have that written in my contract)
