Hi all am new to Mumsnet

I am currently on Maternity leave from my job as a prim sch teacher after having my second daughter in June08.

I'm due to go back in 7 weeks and am dreading it

No1 Gonna miss my little Ivie sooo much
No2 After paying childcare myself it hardly leaves me with any money.
No3 I wouldn't have to pay before/after school for my 7 year old.
No4 The amount of extra work from being a teacher is ridiculous.

Are there any mums out there who can help me with my decision - offer any insight/pros/cons etc?

Would appreciate any help xx

childminding is a fab job but is lots of paperwork

my friend a teacher has decided to take a couple of years off but works evening doing english/maths with children @ £10 per hr

Hi
Second the tutoring idea. I am also a trained primary teacher and went on a site - think it's UK tutors.com or something similar advertising my services for evening tuition and got a couple of replies. Decided not to do it but was putting a fee of £25 an hour! Is something I may go back to when no. 2 arrives if work won't let me go part time. Have also been thinking of childminding so watching this thread with interest....

Hi

I used to be a primary teacher and am now childminding as I was in the same boat as you with the same 4 reasons for not going back to teaching! I'm really happy with the choice I've made. There is a lot of paperwork to childminding but not nearly as much as there is with teaching plus your teaching background should give you a headstart with the obs and planning.

I also know that the fact I was previously a teacher was a good selling point for me as a cm.

The only thing that worries me is that I am missing out on the new developments in teaching (new numeracy strategy, I think! Who knows what else...) and I'm not sure how much of a problem that will be when I go back into the job market.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, it's a tough decision.

There is not as much paperwork childminding as being a teacher def!

I know how you feel, I gave my job up to be a childminder, didn't see much point in paying someone else to look after mine while I was looking after theirs as it were!

Maybe it would depend on what you need financially, as your wage will always go up as a teacher I guess. But then I'd rather have less money and things and be at home!

I'm lucky as my DH is a secondary teacher (urgh!) and he earns lots more than me!! BUT he does always have some work to do, marking etc etc etc!

Go for it!!

Im a nanny and was looking into doing childminding instead when returning off maternity leave which was a hard dicision for me.
Luckily a perfect nanny job came up before Id decided to change and Il be getting Ofsted registered with this family.
I still might look into it in the future though as I think Id prefer it (except all the paperwork!!) ...at a guess I would say teaching has more paperwork than childminding though so wouldnt say this is a problem for you.
I would say go for it, why get someone else to look after your children when you can!
Good luck
