How often to you check on sleeping mindees?

My 2 mindees plus ds are all fast alseep, hence being on here! My question is how often do you think is best to check on them? Both of them sleep really lightly and get woken up really easily so I really don't like going up there unneccessarily. I probably check once or twice during a 2 hour nap. Do you think that is sufficient? I mean what is going to happen? I have the monitor on so hear when they wake and would hear if the were sick or something. What do you do?

Just popped up to check and worst sleeper stirred and woke even though I barely got close to her. Should have stayed downstairs, she hasn't had enough sleep!

My mindees only ever sleep downstairs, so I can check on them easily.

Once / twice sounds fine for a sleep that long.

I have a baby monitor and is senses movement as well. I tend to check them half way through their nap. If I hear them breathing/snoring or they are moving about, I tend to leave them alone so I don't disturb. They are toddlers as well. If it were a baby I would check in more often.

as a nanny i let sleeping babies sleep

i dont go in at all(unless a reason to go in) and i have the monitor which i try and listen to a few times!

i think checking once or twice is more than enough!

as a nanny they are (normally) asleep in their own bedrooms if it makes a difference? (though when we are at friends and they are napping a travel cot idont check then either)

I don't ever check on my DD . I can hear her breathing through the monitor though so I wouldn't know more than if I went up there. Not sure what Oftsed would be like with this though

i also went to checkn on 15 month old mindee as i usually do and she woke up - as she usually does very soon after i check on her no matter how quiet I am.

now she has gone home really really tired.....

Lilybeto · 06/01/2009 15:01

I used to check on my mindees (I am a mothers help) about every 15 minutes because I was so worried. Now that I have been working here for quite a while, I will check on the younger one about once an hour and the older ones (aged 5-9) about once every two hours.

lindseyfox · 06/01/2009 15:51

a babysitting agency i worked for in past said under baby under 12mths should be check on every 30mins-hr.

My techie nerd electrically savvy DP has rigged an infra red camera ( very small, looks like a light ) above DS's cot and connected it to the television dowstairs. I was a bit sceptical at first but it's been great as DS is a ridiculously light sleeper and we have the worlds loudest creaking floor boards. I can just flick over the tv to check on him and can even see his chest rising and falling in the dark. It's very funny watching him when he's awake in his cot too. Obviously we will remove it when he gets to 14!

As a nanny I would check every half hour or so but to be honest if, God forbid, a baby stopped breathing you have such little time to do anything that you would have to be checking every few minutes. I think with most baby monitors you can usually hear babies snuffling away as they sleep.

popperdoodles · 06/01/2009 17:18

Thanks. I due my first ofsted and just trying fine tune things/review what I do etc. I feel ofsted would want to hear I check on them regularly but in reality they sleep better if i stay well away!

I'm a nanny, and I don't check at all. I've only used a baby monitor for babies under a year as well.

nannyL · 06/01/2009 18:42

as a nanny when i have them over night i dont check them at all

i sleep myself and so do they

given they sleep for 9 hours ish without being checked in the night i really dont see why they would need checking day (and i have no intention of waking hourly all night to check they are asleep!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/01/2009 22:51

some jobs have had camera/heart monitor

others just have normal moniter - will put them to sleep, once alseep, i gen check 5 mins later to make sure covers arent kicked off etc, then leave firmly alone and

come on mumsnet!! watch tv. have lunch and chill till they wake

navyeyelasH · 07/01/2009 22:44

I must be a wimp! I check every 20-25 mins and listen closely on the monitor, children range from 8 months - 3 years. When I do overnight care my sleep is horrendous; I'm a really deep sleeper and super paranoid about not being able to hear the child (even with monitor in room) so am on edge all night!

But I'm light in my toes and only peek in the door to look nothing that could risk waking. If I had one that I thought I might wake I'd just listen via the monitor TBH.

Good look with your inspection, they normally flag up stupid things like not having a sign that says "bow wash your hands" in the loo for your 8 month old mindee. Also I have read loads of inspections where CMers certificate (either food / first aid) had expired, or the CMer didn't have the necessary permission form, in particular emergency treatment seems to be one that a lot in my area didn't have.

Mum2Luke · 07/01/2009 23:39

Have any of you got very unsupportive husbands who don't want: fireguards, stairgates etc? I have one of these and when OFSTED decide to do an inspection it will be him that accompanies me and let the inspector rip a shread of him for a change.

My stairgate is on (sometimes) the gap into the kitchen and its driving me mad now as it keeps coming off at the pressure pads. Have tried putting any extra bit of wood but no it falls off! Grrrr! Its coming off at weekends when I have no mindees.

Shouldn't your 8 month old be able to read the notice in the bathroom? Shame on you!
