Sorry if this has been asked before, but do CM need to be VAT registered? I know there's no VAT on childcare but what about new purchases you make for cming & claiming the VAT back?

I think there is a threshold for being VAT registered...I'm sure someone with more idea will be along soon but I think under £63K earnings a year you don't/can't need to be?

You need to keep all receipts though to reduce your tax bill.

No, most childminder's would not meet the threshold requirement. Threshold is currently £67,000 turnover per annum. VAT - Registration Guide

Irrespective of the threshold Childcare is specifically exempt from VAT

Have details in front of me from Alliance and Leicester Bank home page.
It says the provision of childcare by day care providers, who are registered with ofsted ,are excemp for vat purposes.
KatyMac is quite right..

You wouldn't believe the hoops I had to jump through to get that info from the VAT office in writing
