Nanny Christmas gift/"bonus"

I have a gift for our nanny, but is it traditional to give a cash bonus too? Someone from America said a full week's salary extra...but that seems maybe excessive? Can anyone with a nanny please advise? Cheers.

me too

There has been quite a few threads on this lately. Lots of bosses seem to give a cash bonus but equally lots of nannies have been on here to say that they don't get one and are more than happy with a gift/card. So don't feel pressured into giving her cash unless a) you can afford it and b) she's worth it.

other thing to consider is what will happen next year...

we paid a v generous bonus the Xmas after dd was born to say thank you for all her help, but then have felt obliged to match this every Xmas since. If I had thought about this, I would have downsized the original bonus as I feel it is too generous for an annual amount

I give nanny (well ex nanny sort of), cleaner and dogwalker a week

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2008 15:28

every year - since i started nannying after qualifing 17yrs ago = I have had a cash bonus and it is normally a weeks salary

neeedless to say my 1st years salary (17yrs ago) was a LOT less than last years - asi earn more a day now, then what i earnt in a week

but seems from a lot of these threads about at the moment, dont give their nannies a bonus

think on one of them,i was the only one out of lots of replies

nbee84 · 18/12/2008 15:31

Lol blondes at earnings now and back then.

My 1st nanny job, 22 years ago, paid half of what I earn per day now

nbee84 · 18/12/2008 15:32

half per week!!!

We don't give a bonus at xmas, but I do make an effort to get a bunch of nice presents from us and the kids. Our nanny's birthday is the end of November, which can get tricky, but we've sort of agreed with her that we get her biggish b-day presents (I spend about £100-150 in total every year and make her a cake, decorate the house etc - she doesn't live in but its nice to arrive to a party feeling) and then less at xmas. But we don't do xmas in our family (wrong religion) so maybe that makes a difference, as she knows we're not all spending lots of money on each other?

I'm wondering what my bosses will do at Christmas. It's my first year with them and they are Jewish so don't do Christmas. So I am not expecting anything, though it is Hannukah next week but I think it's only children that get presents. I'd only been there for 2 months when I had my birthday and they really spoilt me - homemade cards, homemade birthday cake, presents and a voucher - I almost cried

Thank you everyone. Funny, I checked the old threads in the chlldcare topic, but didn't find any on nanny gifts, just childminders' which is possibly a slightly different scenario I think.

Anyway: thanks to your advice, I've given my nanny a week's salary (+ a gift). I don't have much cash in the bank at the moment, so I wrote a cheque, as will have enough in the bank by the time she cashes it. (I'm leaving for the US tomorrow, so can't wait til the cash comes in.) I hope a cheque is OK; you all talk about "cash" bonus, which I assume means not a cheque?

Many thanks for the advice.

cheque or cash is fine with me

have a fun time in usa

I don't understand this giving of bonuses for Christmas. Admittedly this is my first UK nanny job but ive been nannying for years in Australia and not once have I ever heard of someone getting a bonus. Actually in any job the only people I have heard getting bonuses were those in the financial industry. Why is it that so many people expect it (im not being rude or anything just curious)? I just received something from my boss and I was amazed (and grateful). It was less then a third of my normal salary which I thought was wonderful. I dont understand how so many nannies expect a weeks salary??

wellbalanced · 19/12/2008 15:56

I finished work yest and got my lovely prezzies, ive been there 3yrs and never got a cash bonus, yes it would be handy but i like my prezzies and im v grateful...

nannynick · 19/12/2008 19:21

I'm working next week, well one day next week... so have yet to get my Xmas present. But I suspect it may be of the Wine variety, as my boss asked me what I drank

AussieLou - I don't understand it either. Guess some of us nannies are less money orientated than others - bottle of wine suits me fine.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/12/2008 19:24

its not that i expect it, but just that i have always had a cash bonus - guess i am lucky - but i also work for wealthy famillies

wine suits me fine as well

if you are offered a bonus, you are hardly going to turn round and say no thnaks, and give it back

sicksantadenier · 19/12/2008 19:27

a weeks extra salary is a fantastic gesture, very lucky!
