Would it put you off hiring a nanny if s/he was very heavily pierced?

As an employer, would you find it off-putting if a potential nanny candidate was very visibly pierced or tattooed?

not really... if they were right nice n that

daftpunk · 04/12/2008 19:08

no, not at all..(depending on what the tattoos were of course.)

skidoodle · 04/12/2008 19:09

no

thisisyesterday · 04/12/2008 19:10

no, it wouldn't. but then I have tattoos and piercings myself, so i guess I am kind of biased.

brotherhoodofwoman · 04/12/2008 19:11

Just more out of curiosity than anything else - I think I would worry that enquiring baby fingers would attempt to pull the shiny sparkly things. I have enough problems with my necklace...!

Well I wouldn't let her near the fridge magnets.

NumberFour · 04/12/2008 19:12

yes

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 04/12/2008 19:13

Depends. I saw a woman recently with piercings through the base of her neck. Looked like it was just recovering from an infection and was pretty grim. I don't know if it's fair to thing badly of her in hygiene terms but it would put me off, I have to say.

piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 19:13

YES

flowerytaleofNewYork · 04/12/2008 19:14

rofl at Fabio.

Wouldn't bother me per se, only concern would be if there were lots of piercings readily visible and available to small fingers, assuming child was that kind of age.

My nanny has a tattoo.

FabioTheLiterateCat · 04/12/2008 19:14

How could she take the baby swimming?
Surely with all the punctures the nanny would fill with water and drown.

suwoodolf · 04/12/2008 19:15

No. I am another one with tattoos and piercings, although they aren't particularly visible.

daftpunk · 04/12/2008 19:17

you probably couldn't discriminate against her anyway, there's probably a law now..tattooism or something?

flowerytaleofNewYork · 04/12/2008 19:17

My mum, on the other hand, would be horrified!

brotherhoodofwoman · 04/12/2008 19:24

What if your child were to turn around and say "Mummy, I want a bar through my nose like Nanny"?

OP posts:
piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 19:25

Tattoos would put me off too.

flowerytaleofNewYork · 04/12/2008 19:26

I'd say 'soon as you're 18 son, you can have as many bars through whichever part of your body you like'.

thisisyesterday · 04/12/2008 19:27

i would say that if they still want one when they're old enough they can do what they like

nofear · 04/12/2008 19:28

Yes, because in my experience of having had an au pair heaviy into piercings, the obsession with piercings reflected immaturity, self obsession, eating disorders, selfishness and laziness.

Maybe not the fairest of reasons, and certainly not how I viewed her in the beginning before I understood how much her character was intertwined with the pain and self mutilation of her piercings.

I would rather go for understated, natural self confidence.

brotherhoodofwoman · 04/12/2008 19:28

I'm struggling with myself - saw someone for an interview, she was perfectly nice but VERY heavily tattooed and pierced. Fact is, she probably lives a smidgen too far away for it to work, but I'm not sure if she lived close enough that I would choose her, and I'm not sure I like that about myself.

I think it's horrible to look at.

I wouldn't want someone into piercings looking after my kids, no.

I do think it's a shame to generalise about something like that. I know some wonderful kind, considerate, generous people with tattoos and piercings or both and would certainly trust any of them with DS.

devoutsceptic · 04/12/2008 19:35

Yes

branflake81 · 04/12/2008 19:36

Yes it would, to be honest. I hate tattoos. It's judgemental I know, but there you go. I wouldn't write someone off completely but it would deter me.
