i have just had a phone call from my cousin and have agreed to childmind her little boy, she wants him to start tomorrow, which is fine, i have the space, but shes not intrested in filling out any paperwork, i've tried explaining to her over the phone that legally she needs to, but her response was, i dont want you to look after him as a childminder, i need you to look after him as a cousin who i'm paying. ive asked her to bring him 30 mins befroe she needs to leave him so we can makesure all the paperwork is done, but she just said, i will if i can, if not dont worry too much about it.
how can i explain to her that she needs to do it tommorow or i cant have him.
do you think i'm over reacting and as shes family i should just do it and not stress over the paper work???

It's easy

OFSTED won't let you look after him without the paperwork

If you accept money without the paperwork you could be prosecuted

You can have him for free without the paperwork

But if she wants to pay you must have the paperwork

How well do you know your cousin? Do you think she might have literacy problems/dyslexia? This is very commonly the case when people are cagey about filling in forms - they are trying to hide the lack of good reading/spelling ability.

Just a thought. In which case, if you said it was just signatures you needed, it might help - then just say oh I just need to fill in this box here, what is X? (Sorry don't know much about what paperwork is needed)

thankyou, i know that, i guess i'm just stressing at the short notice and everything else.
ofcourse i cant accept him with out paperwork. thankyou, i just needed some one to say that!

How awkward, hope it goes well for you tomorrow and she agrees to the paperwork! Maybe explain the insurance benefits if he were to get injured in your care also. Not something that is likely to happen, but best to have everything in place just in case.
