Daily Risk Assessments.

I went to a local support drop in for Childminders on Monday and was told that I needed to do a daily ticklist risk assessment. Aparently OFSTED gave someone an inadequate last week because they don't do them so I am in a bit of a panic.

I was told to record that I check the garden, fences, gate, check that a dog hasn't got in, any risks due to weather and then presumably one inside for socket covers, quick check over toys etc. Is there anything else you would put on a tick list I am a bit confused because I feel the house is pretty much childproof anyway?

For anyone who's interested the "inadequate" was because it had been raining in the night and rainwater had collected in a plantpot outside which this particular CM hadn't recorded as a risk

i had this problem a couple of weeks ago, if you like, i can e-mail you my daily one i use. but basicly its just going from rom to room, checking socket covers are on, there is enough nappies within reach, radiators are at teh right temp, window locks are on, sdafety gates are secured properly, stairs are free for stuff, fridge is at the right temp etc etc

Are we seriously meant to do one daily??? How long do we keep them for?
I need an extention built for my paper work!
I've been doing them twice a year! Thought that was enough
can I be cheeky leonifay and ask for a copy too?

personally girls, i would do the R/A regulary but not daily (on paper) but i would put in my t&c in section about R/A (so they can see you're 'on it' so to speak, that i do a visual/mental one EVERy day and state things i check for..no broken toys in or out, no animal poo in garden, first aid kit checked and so on.

Was on Risk Assessment training on Monday and someone suggested doing the checklist, laminating it and using a pen which you can wipe clean each day. But then Eleanorsmum (was on same course) said best to keep at least 1 paper copy a month on file to prove to Ofsted. Just a thought

This is so silly. A school and nursery don't even do a risk assesment every day. I really think so many people will give up CM if this continues.

DaisyMooSteiner · 26/11/2008 23:06

The preschool I'm chair of does do a tick-sheet type risk assessment every day, so it's not just childminders.

chloemegjess · 26/11/2008 23:13

Really? I worked in a school and private day nurseries and don't remember anything like this.

But even if they did. A CM is meant to be a home from home environment.

I really wish they wouldn't go so over the top. And what are they children meant to be doing while we do all these checks? Realistically you do these checks without even thinking. You wouldn't let the child play somewhere unsafe etc but to have to go round with a checklist seems so silly for somebody at home.

chloemegjess · 26/11/2008 23:15

Is there any chance somebody could Fwd me that sample? I need help with all this paperwork!

My email is [email protected]

It is only a very recent thing that our preschool has started doing. I hate the idea of it too, although I can kind of see the use of it. I think the problem is though that tick sheets etc become so routine and people rely on them so much that the risk is that people just mindlessly tick things off without using their brains and don't notice other hazards. eg I saw a member of staff ticking things off last week and then realised that she'd missed a blindingly obvious, seriously dangerous hazard because she wasn't really thinking about what she was doing and focussed on ticking boxes!

leonifay · 27/11/2008 09:11

i've just e-mailed it out for you. i really hope it helps

MrsPuddleduck · 27/11/2008 13:32

Thanks leonifay - its a real help
