CM Club: how strict are you with your D&V exclusion policy?

If one of your mindees has Diarrhoea or Vomitting or both, do you stick firmly to the generally accepted 48 hour rule as contained in your policy? Or do you operate a 24 hour rule policy?
Do you insist the mindee stays away for the stated period?

I am so strict about it it is unbelievable.

I wasn't at one time, let them come back the next day sort of thing.

Until one bug went round, and round, and round, each child getting it in turn, and all their families, so even if they were clear their siblings were not, so they got it again!

Finally I got it really bad, which for me meant I couldn't keep down any pain meds, so that was it I shut for 72 hours.

Now if a child is sick (I don't mean from coughing sort of thing, or diarrhoea, they go home for 48 hours, Full Stop, no negotiation.

Illhavethisinsize12 · 17/11/2008 13:42

i do, but you only have the parents word for whether or not they have been clear for the 24 hour period1

KatyMac · 17/11/2008 13:43

Umm In Norfolk it is 72hrs & very strict

mumsanutter · 17/11/2008 14:07

No 4, I have a 48hour rule, which I stik to, but as 12 said we only have the parents word that dc has ben sickness free!

AbbaFan · 17/11/2008 14:27

I would definitely stick to the 48 hour rule.

Booh · 17/11/2008 17:02

Strict 72 hour rule around here too, after we had the Norvo (sp?) bug last year going around and around.

I changed my policy after the schools and nurseries around me changed theirs too!

southernbelle77 · 17/11/2008 17:29

I try and stick to 48 hour rule, but also know that parents can be a bit loose with the truth!

NumberFour · 17/11/2008 17:32

My policy clearly says 48 hours but I have been lax, and accepting children back after 24 hours.

This has got me thinking now about insisting on 48 hours. One of my mindees had both D & V this morning at 8ish and nothing more since. I have told mum he can come back tomorrow.

Make a decision for me please!!!!!

(think I should just reread what has been written above..... !)

I have a strict 48hr rule. I do this because if my children or DH catches it (one after the other) I could potentially have to close for a month or so. DD had a really bad bout of this last year which lasted 11 days. AND parents insisted on sending their children to me!

TheOtherMaryPoppinsFleckles · 17/11/2008 19:15

As strict as I can possibly be. I cannot afford to not earn and if I am off sick I don't earn.

It's always 48hrs with me. I have no truck with anyone who attempts to not comply.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsFleckles · 17/11/2008 19:17

No4 - I class D&V as 2 episodes in a short time of either D or V, say a few hours, a morning, an afternoon whatever.

In your case I wouldn't have sent home unless there was more

NumberFour · 17/11/2008 19:31

Thanks, TOMPF
My DS also only let rip once - all over his duvet! but has been bouncing around all day since! that was at the ungodly hour of 5.20am.

Yes, I think that that is a good way of helping to make a decision about D&V. Sometimes it is blatanly obvious, other times just a bit of sickness, so to speak.

thanks, everyone for your help.

My CM says 12 hours from the last time they ate without being sick. So if they are sick in the day, eat at night and then keep it down overnight, they can come back. You're contagious before you are sick. I think NHS guidance is 24 hours from the time they were sick, so 12 hours from the last time they ate without being sick seems in line with that. 48 hours is too much, cos you are contagious before you are sick and when you are sick (unless it's food poisoning, in which case simple hygiene will keep everyone else safe but they are unlikely to be able to come back too quickly with that anyway).

As for the runs, she also says 12 hours. But what's the runs? My son (who's now 6) goes once every 2 days. So going twice in one day would seem like the runs for him! But it's not, and you can't exclude a child because they've had too much fruit or something, again, that's down to hygiene, not exclusion. What you are trying to avoid is a bug going round.

Goodness knows where the 72 hour rule has come from - that's a nice little earner for CMs and nurseries isn't it - exclude the child for 3 days and still charge!

You need to find a happy medium which keeps the parent in a job, the child healthy and the rest of your charges (and you) sickness and runs-free. 72 hours is too much in my view.

Shoshe · 17/11/2008 20:03

hellywobs, the info for 48 hours comes from here and no it is NOT a nice little earner, because when we catch it, we close and DO NOT get paid.

looneytune · 17/11/2008 21:06

I'm with Shoshe there. Can I just ask, hellywobs, are you saying that you're not actually contagious when you are being sick? Just that if you are then I'm not sure where you got your info from as it's DEFINITELY not true! The day I mentioned where I sent baby home once sick for the 4th time, my SIL popped round to say hi and then came down with exactly the same thing 24 hours later. I hadn't seen her for ages before then plus she was only near me so it's me she must have got it from.

As for nice little earner that really pi**es me off as we go by what the HEALTH AUTHORITY advice us to do and I lost lots of money for closing and caught this from one of the others in the first place, trusting that their loose stools etc. were down to other reasons.

I must say though I do find it hard sticking to a strict 48 hour thing but am going to start being more strict after the last time!!

TheOtherMaryPoppinsFleckles · 17/11/2008 21:11

Hellywobs, it's 48 hours as advised in my area by our Local Health Authority and the SCMA as best practise.

Remember we also have to stick to this ourselves should we become ill with D&V, and many many many CM do not charge fees when they are sick, myself included.

I think it's safe to say we know our mindees well enough to know what is normal bowel movemtn for a child and wether something is out of the oridnary

Nice little earner my ass.

thebody · 18/11/2008 14:22
