how does settling in with a childminder work?

I'm just thinking about going back to work as DD is almost 1 now, and I'm in the throes of applying for jobs at the moment. I'll obviously need some child care, and I think I'd prefer a childminder to a nursery. What I was wondering was how does everybody do settling in? Do you have a few short visits? or short days or something? And how far in advance do you recommend to parents that they start sorting out this sort of thing?
Thanks for any advice, I'm completely clueless at the moment!

I let parents decide after all they know their child best.

It usually works out mum comes with them for the first time to do paperwork then the next time they stay until they feel happy to go and then they come back after an hour or so the next time they go quite quickly.

I would go round quite a few now then when you get offered a job go back to the ones who stuck in your mind to make a final decision. Be honest though, I hate it when a parent comes and says im the one they want then they don't ring to let me know what's happening.
