How much should i charge someone on shiftwork

Help!!Had a call from a guy about childminding his 7 month old son. He does shiftwork (4 on 2 off) so could be 3 or 4 days each week depending on shifts, and for 6 or 7 hours each day. I really wanted somebody full time (9-10 hrs each day) but have had no calls for f/timers for ages. Do any of you mind for shiftworkers and if so do you have a minimum amount of hours that you expect to be paid for? My friend, who is also a childminder says she would charge minimum 30 hrs a week at £4.50 per hr (greater london). What do you think?

Oh dear Cherryblossom - I am currently loosing a fortune on a shift worker.

I agreed to be paid for the Hrs he was here and I loose loads.

I would think very carefully about what you need - he might be quite desperate. I think 30 hrs is quite reasonable (and wish I had done that).

Explain that if they only want to pay the hrs he does - then you might get a better offer from a F/T child at any time.

Good Luck

hi i have a mum who does shift work i charge for the full 5 days as its not set days but they only come 3 times a week but still get paid for a full timer as she is using that place as i wouldnt be able to fill it unless it was some one else on shifts im in west yorkshire its 3.50 p/h but double time before 8 and after 6 pm but only for 3 days a week and if she works extra on another day its double on that day before 8am this works for every one she is covered and i get payed for a full time place hope this helps ..

My CM charged us for what we used, on the basis that she wasn't exactly beating prospective punters away. I guess it depends on your position. Better to get paid for shiftwork rather than nothing if you aren't full. If you know you can fill the place full-time then its a no brainer I'd say.

unless you are turning work away because of the unusual hours it's blatantly unfair to discriminate in this way towards a shiftworker.

if a parent on shift work doesnt work set days u charge for every day as u can not fill it this is the advice given in the n.c.m.a hand book but the parent still has the choice to send ther child on the other days as thy r paying for them also its a cm choice they work this way after all its a service we provide .

That's assuming, of course, that you can fill your hours. The shiftworker may have other options and look elsewhere, leaving you with nothing. Really, it is just market forces.
