Holiday pay for childminders?

Hi everyone, need your advice/help please.

My dd has been with the current childminder for almost 2 years, no contract changes in that time. Yesterday I get a text telling me that she now has to take the government standard 4 weeks paid holiday!

Currently if she takes holiday or is sick she does not get paid as I either have to take the time off or pay someone else to look after my dd. Now I used to be a contractor and if I didnt work I didnt get paid - I'm a single mum and I pay her 50% of a week if my dd is on hols or sick. Is she taking the mickey?

A bit unprofessional to text you really. If it wasn't in the contract you signed then she can't charge you it without updating the contract and getting you to sign it. Whether you agree to the changes is up to you. If not then you'll probably have to find an alternative. I know there are plenty who do charge for holidays. Our's doesn't, but we pay the full rate for bank holidays and if we go away.

Hello, replied on your other one, but again, there is no gov standard and she is telling you lies. She is self employed not empolyed.

The NCMA recommend that you have four weeks paid holiday (you can find it on their website)

I have four weeks paid holiday, I have NEVER had a parent question it, actually one parent paid me an extra weeks holiday this year even though her child was leaving me at the end of August.

Around here (south east) it is the norm to charge for holidays.

She is also doing you a really good deal in only chargind you 50% if your DD is sick or on holiday as I, and a lot of other childminders would charge full rate

Why don't you talk to her about your concerns

My CM takes 3 weeks paid holiday. I pay her half pay for her holidays (full pay for bank holidays) and full pay for when I am on holiday or my dc is sick.

Have to say if I was sent a message like that by text, i'd probably change my childcare arrangements.

Childminders are self employed, one of the downsides to that is no holiday pay and limited sick pay (ssp) but they know that and can calculate for those instances within their normal billing.

Unless you are happy to pay and sign a new cntract, she cant enforce it on you by text.

I'd disagree hm. The holiday and sick pay arrangements were written into the NCMA contract I signed and from what I know of other childminders in the area this is normal practice. I don't pay my childminder if she is off sick (never happened in 3.5 yrs) but I do pay her holiday pay as per the contract.

I posted this on your other thread:

Yes, she is lying as there is no government standard. The NCMA RECOMMEND we take the 4 weeks paid but it's still up to us childminders whether or not we are paid. And she can't do this without a new contract stating so!
