A question for Child Minders-overnight care?

We are looking for one off overnight care for our dd2.

It would be from 5.30pm until 10am. I was thinking of asking our childminder, but I don't know if this is something which CMs ever offer, or allowed to do (according to OFSTED)? I don't want her to think I'm insane!

If you do offer this facility-how much do you charge?

Thanks for any help you can offer

Hi there

Lots of childminders DO do overnight care but they have to be REGISTERED to do so.

I charge £70 a night (this was set by the parents who wanting me to register for it). Most childminders will charge a high fee like this to make it worth while after having kiddies all day (and of course because we never sleep properly as always keeping an ear open )

The only problem I'd have with those hours is IF those hours would take me over my numbers i.e. you child not with me that day and the other children don't finish til later/start earlier).

I'd certainly ask if she's registered for overnight care

I think your cm will have to think very wisely if she were to oblige with the overnight care. She wouldn't be insured for this. Ofsted have to inspect the cm when they request to offer overnight care and a new certificate is issued. Maybe she would come to your house and sleep for the night.

I'm assuming she isn't registered for overnight care. If she is then great!

Bettyboobird · 09/10/2008 13:38

Thanks Looneytune-I should have said in OP. she would already have my dd as she is there that day from 1-5.30pm. dd goes to bed at 6pm and sleeps through until 8am (if allowed to, dd1 normally wakes her at 7am lol) so hopefully it won't be too much extra stress for CM!

Is it likely that she will be registered, considering she only registered this year and my dc are the only children she has in her care? If you had to do a seperate application or pay any extra, I doubt she is registered...

It's always worth asking though! Thanks again

She may well have asked for that at the point of registering? If you don't want to ask her, her certificate should be on display somewhere for you to see at all times, if you look on that it will say 'is registered to provide overnight care' (or something like that) if she IS reg'd. But I'd still ask, you never know.

I wasn't registered because at my old house I didn't have a spare room for a mindee to nap overnight on their own. I was then asked over a year ago if I'd consider registering as they wanted regular overnight care for their baby. I did this (NO CHARGE so no problem) and an inspector just popped round to check my house was ok for overnight care and they approved it.

If she's not registered and doesn't want to be, then yes, you could have her stay at yours if she has no other mindees, worth asking her

Hi betty

my lovely childminder had DS1 overnight whilst DS2 was being born, she is registered, and refused any payment as it was a favour, ask her and see what you think!

nooOOOoonki · 09/10/2008 13:44

sorry - she what she thinks!

looneytune · 09/10/2008 13:46

Oh, and in nooOOOoonki's situation then of course I'd do for free as a favour It was only because I was having this mindee regularly overnight and she was only 3 months or so old that I had to make it worth m while. Having said that, I would never have said that cost off my own back but they insisted on paying that and so that's what I set my prices at

I am a qualified childrens nurse and reguarly have 2 children overnight about 1mth on average at their home (parents are there on some occasions but alseep, they go out til early hrs then have a lie!!)

I do from 8pm til 10am and its an hrs return journey (they pay for that too) and am paid £150. The children are now 7mths and 2yrs but youngest was 3wks old when I started and have had them for whole weekends when they have gone away.

lindseyfox · 09/10/2008 16:40

sorry pressed return by accident

another family I have worked for was a consultant who did one night a week work wise and I had her baby aged 6mths from 4pm til 7am and was paid £125 for that time. That was jan-mar this year.
