I did start out doing the nanny's tax myself but tbh it's taking too much time and causing too much stress. Frankly i don't care how much a payroll firm costs any more, if it means i never have to speak to inland revenue again and can stop worrying about getting it wrong it's worth it....any recommendations? are nannytax any good?

nannytax is rubbish. have used them for 8 m now, they have made countless erros with simple tasks, not replied to any emails or phonecalls, forgot to tell me how much tax to pay. And they cost £260/year.

I would be happy to hear of any recommendations too.

I have gone with Nannypaye on the recommendation of several people on here.

Cheaper than Nannytax, and they didn't have the glaring employment law errors that Nannytax have/had on their website. Having said that I haven't used or seen their contract or used their employment law advisory service so I've no idea whether Nannypaye's knowledge or advice in that area would be any better.

I'm not going to rave about them I'm afraid. They made several errors when my nanny first started, fairly basic ones unfortunately, so I had to question what they did and chase for things. Service since has been adequate, although recent payrise for hours increase seemed to be a bit more of a challenge than i would have expected. We got there in the end though.

It's cheap and cheerful, gets the job done, but keep an eye out to make sure everything is as you need.

have you thought about approaching a local bookkeeper(or even a far afield one as they don't have to be local, everything can be done via phone/post/email!) Local firms of accountants would also be ableto deal with the payroll for you. A one man and or bookkeeper would be cheaper than a firm of accountants though.

I would recommend this lot with no second thoughts whatsoever. If you get Sandra looking after you (and I think she does all the nannies) she's a total star. my nanny had a complete and utter tax credit shambles and Sandra was brilliant. and they send you a little packet of chocolates at Christmas .

I no longer recommend Nannypaye - in the last year they have managed to ask me to pay an incorrect amount of tax/NI and then send a (non-apologetic) demand that I instantly pay the outstanding amount (when I rang up about it they said there was a typo on their original letter).
Then this week I have had a letter from the IR saying that no records had been filed for the last quarter and that I had to file them NOW or else (this was direct from IR to my home address, not to nannypaye's address) so I had to ring and tell them to send off some NIL payslips for that quarter because i didn't have a nanny at that time (but they didn't inform the revenue that I had paid out Zero...and in the next post I have their latest quarterly calculations - and they have left out a week in the middle of nanny's employment..so that is wrong and they have to send me out a new one.
So..after a few years of recommending them I take back all of my old posts and say ..try someone else in my opinion.

Still with Nannytax here, but I wasn't impressed with the service when one nanny went on maternity leave and another took over. They managed no bother 4 years ago when the same thing happened! Can't recommend them now and won't be renewing my subscription when it runs out.

As a nanny, PAYE for Nannies seems to be ok at present. They have done less than a handful of payroll runs so far for my employer, so it's early days, but my boss hasn't mentioned any problems. Time will tell.

woodstock3 · 04/10/2008 19:47

thankyou all...i suppose it should be heartening to learn that i seem at least to be screwing up only as much as the average professional payroll agency...will explore your recommendations nannynick and hatwoman!

I have always done ours myself, but I would use a service if it fulfilled the following criteria:

Cost no more than £100pa

Run totally on-line/email - I don't want payslips through the post, I want them emailed to me and the nanny. And when it's time to pay the NI, don't send me a paying in slip (do they still do this?) just let me know how to set up the online payment.

All I want is to have a (secure) web site that I can log in to, update any details that need doing, say how much I want to pay (net, gross, different amounts each month/week, christmas bonus, whatever), and email confirmation sent to me automatically telling me what I have done. That way there is no lost correspondence, no misunderstood telephone conversations.

A web site with some really good FAQs on, perhaps a support forum too.

... and not too much else really.

Is there such a service?

giraffescantdancethetango · 04/10/2008 21:52

taxing nannies

Cantandwont · 04/10/2008 21:54

PAYE For Nannies is great. Very much no-frills but efficient and do everything promptly and with no fuss as far as I can tell. Cheap, too. Agree with MrVibrating, though - that would be fantastic!

Catilla · 04/10/2008 21:59

I use taxnanny - only £100pa (for monthly-paid)and very minimalist, but when I have needed to ask a question or speak to them I have had a quick and helpful answer.
