An hour? Not out east where we live. I've met people charging between £3.50-6.00. Also depends what you want. It's more per hour if you are only doing the school pick up times to end of day.

SimpleAsABC · 25/08/2008 17:48

Is it a childminder (the child will be cared for in their home) or a nanny (child will be cared for in your home)?

hercules1 · 25/08/2008 17:50

It would be just after school pickup only3-6.

as simple says

sounds like the rate of a nanny not a cm

a nanny will care for child in YOUR home, a cm in theirs!!

hercules1 · 25/08/2008 17:51

Childminder in their home.

some charge that round here (sw london)

imananny · 25/08/2008 17:54

OUCH

but least only 3 hrs

nannynick · 25/08/2008 18:12

I think it would be a little lower if it were full-time. But as it's just after-school, I'm not surprised by the hourly rate.

lindseyfox · 25/08/2008 18:58

blimey you could have a nanny for that, and a very experienced one for £10 net an hr!!!

she would be doing very well with 4 children on £8 an hr!!!

MaureenMLove · 25/08/2008 19:13

It may be that high because you are using her parttime and therefore she may not be able to take on a full time mindee, iyswim. Still think that a hell of a lot for outer London though. I'm in am outer London Borough and round here it's between £3.50 - £5 per hour.

CarGirl · 25/08/2008 19:16

Depends very much where you live, in Weybridge £6 per hour for full time is not uncommon! Anything under £5 is cheap, plus ofsted have changed their rules so until a child is in year 1 they will count in their numbers as if they were a 1 -5 year old.

cece · 25/08/2008 19:21

I pay £4 per hour for similar just outside London. About £4-£6 per hour around here.

elkiedee · 25/08/2008 23:22

My CM charges £5 an hour when she does hourly rates, which is for two of her before/after school mindees, about 4 hours a day - she takes ds and an older toddler for a weekly rate which would be lower per hour. We're in zone 3, ie not very far out but local wages are often a lot lower than central London, however living costs aren't, and I imagine a lot of parents travel into central London as I do.

elkiedee · 25/08/2008 23:23

£8 does sound high, are you in an area where a lot of people are well off?

CountessDracula · 25/08/2008 23:34

Pretty normal here I believe (SW London)

schneebly · 25/08/2008 23:51

they all charge £3 per hour up here!

AtheneNoctua · 26/08/2008 09:00

I think the going rate in and around Twickenham is about £6/hour. So, £8 sounds pretty steep.

HarrietTheSpy · 26/08/2008 09:43

What is her rate for the whole day?

miarosemum · 26/08/2008 15:53

blimey my cm is based in kingston and has an outstanding ofsted recommendation and she charges £6 an hour, i think £8 is very steep even for only 3 hours

alibubbles · 27/08/2008 09:11

I charge a minimum fee for before school of £10 and after school £20, during the day, my minimum fee is £30 for 4 hours.

I find picking up from school with 3 x 18month old in tow, quite strenuous and disruptive for little ones sleeps. I will do it, but prefer not to, so only offer the service to children who have been with me since babyhood, or from the same independent school as a long term mindie.

Kal01 · 06/11/2008 20:48

I've got twins who are 5 months at the moment but will be just over a year when I need a CM, I live in twickenham - what is a reasonable hourly rate for a CM?

poppy34 · 06/11/2008 20:54

Yep I was told £8 to £10 depending on experience is the nanny rate -this sounds a bit expensive (depending on what it includes..how do most cm deal with food , petrol costs etc)

hatwoman · 06/11/2008 21:12

[bit of an aside but you'd be lucky to get a nanny for that. cheapest you'll get a nanny is about £8 net an hour. Depending on how many hours she did that could actually cost you over £11 an hour. Although, having said that, if a nanny only did 3 hours a day (and didn;t have another job) £8 net would actually only cost you about £8.40 an hour. ]

poppy34 · 06/11/2008 21:21

thanks hatwoman.. did realise it was net sadly..out of interest (as you sound knowledgable and I know I'm shamelessly highjacking kal's thread) how do you know which end of net spectrum to go - ie how much experience etc would you be seeing in someone who was at £10 rather than £8 an hour (I'm just trying to judge cos I'm guessing that like anything else if asked a nanny may put cash on what they're already paid)

FrazzledFairyFay · 06/11/2008 21:30

I pay £6/hr in Twickenham, for a 6 hour session, which seems to be the going rate around here. £8 seems very expensive
