Does anyone have any experience of hiring an au pair from the Phillippines? We are currently looking into it and it seems really easy and not that expensive on the face of it. Feels as though we are missing something?!Thanks.

I guess I cross posted, I did not realize she was in Dubai.

I tried to have hired help when I lived in India, but that is a long story and I was so disatisfied I sacked her on her third day, I rather do things myself and became the talk om my neighbourhood.

That was to escape

funkypea - could you ask your friend for the name of the charity? I would rather help someone out of trouble than hire a teenager any day (although our last teenage Scandinavian AP, was fab, QS ) It would be great to know the name of this charity when I am looking next for a nanny/ap/housekeeper (we seem to need them all these days..)...

It's good to hear your experiences - would be good to learm more about the charity funky. Thanks for the links also. Have registered with Au Pair world and am going through what I assume are the usual motions. Probably a really obvious question - but how do you ultimately decide whether the Au Pair can be trusted with you dc? Is it pot luck or how do you judge. We're going to do this, would just be grateful for any advice you can give based on your experiences.

i once contacted that charity/agency. its called something like the filipino centre i think they have two branches, one in camden.
they only offer help from ladies who have visas. there is always some who can have a visa either through some eu relative or marriage or other?...

Just to add, make sure that you are certain that it is a Filipina that you are looking for, with regards to their culture, views etc. From my experience (British expat living in the Philippines) Filipina's tend to be; hard working - they will do exactly as you ask, but no more. Are not self starters. Very quiet and shy. Giggle a lot! All of them seem to love children, especially white / foreign children.
This is obviously just my experience of Filipina's, and I have quite a few household staff and DP has an office full. They are a lovely bunch of people definately very friendly but often frustrating with regards to the amount of common sense they have! Hope this is in some way helpful to you
