How much does a nanny cost?

I'm in Scotland, and am starting to look at childcare options for ds. Started to think about a nanny but I have absolutely no idea how much they cost - or even a ball park figure

Does the nanny (live out) come to you? Do you have to pay other things too?

God this sounds really rude doesnt it? I guess I just havent got a clue about this.

Yep, she comes to you. She is your employee. This means you get to dictate the day (within reason -- if you micromanage she will not be happy and probably leave). It also means you cover any and all costs that she incurs to do her job (within reason). Not sure about live out rates. For a live in you would pay at lease £200 per week net, plus a whole bunch of outrageous taxes on top of that. Can't remember the total figure off the top of my head. Prefer to live in blissful ignorance.

A ive-out nanny for one child is notlikely to be a cost effective form of childcare. Have another baby and get a live-in then it's cost effective.

very ball park, a live-out nanny could cost around £100 per day, including taxes.
Where in Scotland are you? What hours/days do you need?

Geordie minx, where in scotland are you? I'm a nanny looking for work.

I agree £100 per day

  • food / electric etc in your house
  • toddler groups / swimming / activities
  • 40p per mile your nanny drives (unless you provide her with a car)

Geordie Minx, How old is your ds? I'm wondering if 3+ he may be at nursery part of the time and then perhaps you wouldn't required such long hours... Making the cost less!

8ph is roughly average @ mo for jobs which are advertised in Glasgow.

simpla as abc - even if the child IS in nusery, there are not many nannies who will take the job on and not be paid for these hours - the nanny will be on call INCASE charge is ill/on holidays etc

if you have room for a live in then yes costs are a LOT cheaper Geordie
