I'm fortunate in that my mum or mil babysit if me and dh go out. neither are available and I need to find and pay a babysitter to do it, what is the going rate? we live NE England if that makes any difference? will be out for about 5 hours.

About £6 an hour, I would say.

depends on experience etc teenager around £3 an hr to a fully qualified and experienced childcarer at £10 an hr.

www.findasitter.co.uk and www.nannyjob.co.uk have babysitter sections.

I pay £8 p h in London. I don't go out much as a result.

I pay my sister £10 - £15 (she is a very responsible 16 YO BTW ) depending how long we go out for but usually around 4-5 hours! I feel like a right cheap skate although she is family so I guess its not too bad.

I'm not sure how I'd feel leaving DD with a total stranger babysitting and I think I would go out a lot less if I had to pay £10 an hour!!

i charge £10 an hr and admittly its for more wealthy families that i sit for such as university professors, doctors, business owners. One family i babysit for is a single mum and if a weekday i do only charge her £7 an hr but £10 an hr at weekends she has 2 school age children and thinks I am a bargain!!!

Well, we don't have a lot to afford to pay huge amounts, but on the rare occasion when my sister or MIL can't babysit, my (almost) 16yo neighbour does it. I usually give her £15 - £20, depending on how long we're out. I guess it's roughly £4 - £5 per hour. We're in Kent.

Hi we're in London and pay £5 an hour but a min of £15. Our 2 (ds and dd are generally in bed before we go) Plus then either dh or I has to drive them home or pay for cab. My friends generally pay the same.

We have a 17 year old very reliable babysitter (daughter of friends). We pay £10 BUT we are only out for a couple of hours, if we were out longer and it was a weekend for example I would give her £15-20.

She gets a lift home. She gets the run of the kitchen (and I buy snacks specially and leave loads out).

The baby is asleep all the time she is here (usually) and dd1 stays up and she literally reads 2 stories and puts dd1 to bed.

It look like there are lots of factors here - e.g. where you live, age of sitter, age and habits/behaviour of children. If both children were awake I would definitely pay more.
