I am looking for someone in the St Albans area to pick up my 2 little boys from school and bring them home/feed them etc until we get home from work, approx 4 hours a day Mon - Friday. I normally have APs but am going to try and get someone who lives out. Thing is, havent a clue what rates I should offer? Anyone got any ideas?

If you are after an experienced carer, nanny agency rates for St Albans show as £7 - £8 per hour net. If you will take someone younger with less experience you may get £6ph

nbee84 · 06/07/2008 22:20

Where are you Love2bake?

lucy7 · 06/07/2008 22:24

So you reckon £7-8 per hour to look after both my children? Anyone have any ideas of a good place to start looking? I really dont know where to start and really need to get cracking with finding someone...

I feel you would be wanting a part-time nanny, so would expect total cost to you to be around £10 per hour (for Gross wage, plus employers NI, mileage payment). You may be able to get someone cheaper, and if school is in walking distance, you could save on mileage cost (40p per mile).
Alternative would be a childminder, but then your boys would go home to the childminder's home and you would collect them from there. That could cost £7-10 per hour (£3.50-£5 per child) I would expect.

Love2bake · 06/07/2008 22:27

I am in West Sussex.

Sorry the £4-5 would be for each child

Advertise on netmums.

Card for notice board at Oaklands college if you would be happy for a 2nd year student to do this.

Gumtree - though you'll need to sift through all the rubbish.

Word of mouth - speak to lots of friends and see if they know anyone.

Start a thread on here, stating where, hours etc and hope that here may be someone out there reading it that is interested.

Should have said re Oakland college - student on childcare course

nbee84 · 06/07/2008 22:30

For St Albans I think you need West Herts netmums. I think Luton is under north herts

lucy7 · 06/07/2008 22:33

Thx guys! will tootle down to Oaklands and put a card up this week !!!

If you use a student I would offer £5 - £6ph.
I never used a student for daytime childcare but found two fantastic babysitters through the board at Oaklands college.

After 3 years of APs am desperate to have my 3rd bedroom back, even if it's just for a few months... wish me luck!

Good luck

chloemegjess · 06/07/2008 23:16

a childminder would be cheaper, and easier to find. But would be at their house not yours

wohmum · 07/07/2008 22:37

Hi,

we're in a similar position - looking for someone to pick up from school and bring backto our house in West London (HA4 - just in case!) again,

Not sure where best to advertise or get someone. I don't really want a nanny wi teh extra costs, how would it work with a student? Do you just pay (whispers) cash in hand?

kkey21 · 08/07/2008 08:30

Hi Lucy7-i was myself a childcare student at Oaklands in St Albans (albeit 12 years ago!)but i never finished before 5pm and certainly never intime to do a school pick up.

If only i was finished on maternity leave myself i would be applying!
I will listen out for you as i still know many nannies/childminders in the area.

What school is the pick up from?

Good Luck....xxx

alibubbles · 08/07/2008 08:54

I am a c/m in St Albans, each child would be £5 -£6 an hour and most have a minimum charge for after school. I pick up from 2 schools.

My DD used to pick a child up from school when she was in the 6th form (from the the Junior House) walk her home and cook tea, she was paid £6 an hour and that was 5 years ago.

Nannies are £9 - £10 an hour, for afterschool hpurs, and difficult to find, but cheaper for full time £8 an hour, look at Tinies website for details.

Which school? I might know a childminder who does a pick up as I mentor new childmnders and have been a minder in St Albans for 22 years!

Other places, the notice board in the children's centre, Church Crescent or one near to where you live.

Ask the school secretary for the list of minders who pick up and drop off, most schools are part of the scheme, I can tell if your is.

You need a young 'granny' type person who would like contact with children and a bit of income and has had experience of own children etc, who might even do your ironing - just what my sprightly neighbour does!
