Probably taking on a nine year old after school starting next week. I've currently got 3 five year olds and a 15 month old, as well as my own son of 2.2. Does it work having an older one? How can I make sure she's not going to get bored?

Before they start I ask the child what they like to do at home and go from there. Some enjoy being involved in your planning - eg, searching internet, library books for activities and going through recipe books together.

If they like to read, use your library to make sure you have appropriate books. If they like crafts they might enjoy helping make role-play props as well as doing Art Attack/Blue Peter style projects. They may have skills (learning an instrument, sports) that can be shared. They might be interested in learning from your skills (eg, when I went on my first aid course they all wanted to practise making slings). Some will play with the little ones and like to join in with role play/drama games eg being a realistic librarian, shopkeeper etc. Some prefer to do separate activities. Board games, cards, painting, making a newspaper, hama beads etc.

Value her opinions, give her opportunities to make suggestions, enjoy the "proper" conversation.

Thanks, that's really helpful.
