What sort of info are you looking for?

I started out as a nanny, then when I had my 2nd child I was a registered childminder. Now that my children are older (14 + 19) I have gone back to nannying.

The earning potential is less as a nanny - though I am on more money now as I never liked to have my full limit of children as a minder, I much preferred having just 2 or 3 lo around.

Now I don't have lots of paperwork, only one set of parents to deal with, only one nursery to drop of at, tax and ni dealt with for me, my house is back to normal - no more stair gates and toys everywhere.

As a childminder you are much more your own boss - you decide your policy's, activities etc and parents have to look for a childminder that suits their ideals.

As a nanny you are more of an employee. What mb and db say is how it has to be done - but hopefully you find a job where your values and childcare styles are very similar.

I have found that being a mother of 2 older children has been to my advantage at interviews. Within 2 weeks of registering with an agency I had 4 interviews, was offered 3 of those jobs, so I had a choice .

i read your post and thought they are the reasons i want to give up childminding, i want my house back my youngest is going to school and i no longer want stairgates, toys taking up my dining area and i want rid of paperwork.

i really wanted some guidance,im thinking of nannying my 2 mindees,i want to go to college 2 days a week and look after them the other 3 days.

obviously mum pays my childminding rates but can i charge more? im not even on minimum wage just now.

where can i find info on what should be in my contract etc

If you go to nannyjob you can search jobs in your area. It may give you a rough idea of wages in your area.

Is the mum prepared to take on your tax and ni insurance? As a nanny you will be employed by her in her home (you cannot be a nanny in your home - you are classed as a childminder) and she will be your employer and will have assoviated costs. Is she willing to swallow these costs - will be quite a lot more expense to her than paying a childminder.

nannyjob also have a sample contact.

I'm afraid you can't be self employed as a nanny unless you are temping or providing very short term contracts.

Don't know all the ins and outs but someone may be along to give you the lowdown.

I think nannynick has lots of knowledge on this.

I'll just call him.......

I am a self employed nanny, I work for 3 families spread over the week, and babysit for them and other.
I am also on the Vol childcare register.
I works well for me, I was on the childminders register, but found nannying was the better option.
It run it like a business, I even use an accountant, as I am terffied of the paper work.
Nannying is a lot less stressful that childminding and a lot less paperwork!! and my house is my own.
I still get all the help I need from the my local Early Years Team and free training.
best think I ever did.

nannydd - how long have you been with your 3 famillies?

if over 6mths then you CAN NOT legally be a se nanny

nannies can ONLY be se IF they are mn/temp nannies and not with a family for over 6mths, as then the job changes from temp to perm, and perm nannies CAN'T be se!!

Hey iamananny I think you were on my post regarding self employment as a nanny. I called my local status officer & basically you are right. You can be a Self Employed nanny if you provide care for various different families that change frequently, buy things for your business (ie I just got some car seats & a buggy) and determine your own hours.

If the work becomes more "regular" with a family then they must employ you. But the status officer said that the words "regular" are open to negotiation and reflected in case law. So could mean same family regardless of days but could also mean seeing same family on same days each time if you see what I mean.

I have one family that I look after all the time and as this is my main income I am classed as an employee and they sort my tax/ni out; but then I have loads of other familes ans for them I am self employed. One of the families I have worked for for 3 months but varying days so the status officer said that is my SE work as I dictate my availability to the family not the to me etc.

It's a bit confusing really! But I think that if nannydd works for these families on a "regular" basis then you are right, nannydd can not technically be self employed. But if nannydd can pick and chose her hours for each family then I think SE stauts is fair.

If a nanny declares herself SE incorrectly it is the family who pay the price & penalty which is a backdate in taxes and a fine apparently so it pays to et these things straight! Just wish it was more straight forward really.
