I saw this today, clicked to the Inland Revenue link here and am wondering if you think that this means that we can now add a proprotion of our mortgage interest to the things we can deduct on our tax returns?

Does anyone else know/have a view?

this was always a vague rule but quite hard to get in practice - if you try to claim it I would make sure you had evidence of how you came to figure (along the lines of the example given) and be prepared for fact that it will be queried. If you've got a bookkeeper helping with your returns may be worht asking them to help.

the trouble is I would imagine that childminding less easy to put into this kind of example (as how much time you spend where will vary) than when you work at home on office based thing where easier to show you do x amount in a study.

plus manual is only guidance - they don't always follow it and frequently alter/withdraw advice.

I would doubt if a childminder could claim, as a childminder would already be claiming a percentage of Household Expenditure under BIM52751.
