Starting as a childminder

Hi. I have worked in childcare all my life (now 44yrs old)
I moved from a preschool 2 years ago to room lead in a nursery all year round, loved it at first but now so fed up with same routine, the bitching and thinking I can provide so much more. I was a childminder 2012-2017.

I have decided to become a childminder. There is only 1 other in village who works 2 days a week. I am sure there would be a big need for this. I am so scared though, its a long process and I plan to open in september.

Not really sure why I am posting! I have to give 12 weeks notice at my current job so plan to give notice 1st june and have 2 weeks unpaid end of aug.

I’m sure you must be scared but it’s really exciting too. You sound perfect for the role and your work/ life balance will be so much better too.
Best of luck with your new venture.

I am a nanny and want to become a childminder too. I am tired to put souch effort into other people's life, the parents that are difficult to deal with, the unreasonable expectations. I want to be my own boss.

I am a bit scared but I think it will be worth it.

It’s daunting starting something new and the uncertainty of how long the registration process might take doesn’t help ! If you haven’t already, do make friends with the existing childminder. It’s great to have someone you can meet at the park or at groups and also to pass on enquiries to each other when you get ones you can’t take on. Especially as she’s only 2 days, she might be able to pass on a lot of work to you and there might be scope for covering some of each others holidays, subject to availability. Good luck and welcome !

You will still be dealing with difficult parents and their unrealistic expectations as a childminder.

Steer clear of Agencies there is no need to pat 30% of your income to the biggest one. Lots of advice from your chosen insurance...Corum Pacey, Childcare.co.uk and various fbook groups as well as your LA.
As it is you will effectively be largley controlled by Government as most work is funded so pay rates etc determined by them look at what your LA demands for Funded spaces.
