Scabies in nursery

Would you expect your child’s nursery to send out some form of comms to parents letting them know there has been a scabies outbreak in your child’s nursery room? My child’s nursery put a poster up with ‘child’s nursery room - scabies outbreak’, if I hadn’t have been waiting for her key worker to come and get her this morning I probably wouldn’t have paid attention to posters on the wall (there’s a lot of them). I am quite shocked that I didn’t receive any direct communication about this considering it can lead to long term health complications. I don’t know if I’m reading too much into it or if my concerns are valid. DC has had a very hard time settling in and cries whenever I say ‘nursery’ not to mention the journey there etc and not sure if my emotions are heightened because of this. Please let me know your thoughts

I assume at least one parent drops off or picks up - therefore the notice is fine.
are you going to keep your kid home? What action will you take to avoid a shoes? I mess you’re intending to keep them off at every outbreak (you might be? I don’t know) what else do you want information on? Nirs? Worms? Chicken pox?

KoalaKoKo · 24/01/2026 01:39

Yeah that would upset me! They should message people and get everyone to be treated as a precaution as it is so highly contagious.

@patootiesMe/ DH/ my mother always drop / pick up. Yes I took my daughter home once I saw the notice. I may keep them off at every outbreak, who knows. But I would like to receive an email/text/something letting me know if there IS an outbreak of something unless I’m being completely unreasonable and that’s not the done thing? My parents look after my daughter (who’s in nursery some days) and my 7m old, for a few hours a week dad is going through chemo/radiation atm and therefore his immune system isn’t great. I just wanted to hear from other people, who have /had children in nurseries if a poster on the wall is standard for informing them of any outbreak.

That’s what I thought too! Thank you for your comment

You aren't being unreasonable OP I think its bad they didn't send emails round. I would be more upset about this than a chickenpox or gastro outbreak as it can be hell to get rid of and spread to the whole family.

wishfulthinking25 · 25/01/2026 00:25

@DustlandFairytaleBeginningI thought the same but wasn’t sure if I was overreacting! Would you mention anything to the nursery or not?

Keep them at home

I thought scabies came under illness that has to be notified? Only saying as I came into contact with scabies though work and had to treat myself and DS with the cream you have to keep on for a while before showering. I had to contact DS school as well. Our GP had to be notified to supply the cream.

PickledMuffin · 25/01/2026 00:42

Agree OP. I’d keep mine at home, scabies is hard to get rid of. the eggs after 3 days of hatching take 3 days to die. you’d need to bag everything up after. deep clean. it isn’t worth the risk of catching it 😬

Pryceosh1987 · 25/01/2026 00:51

I would stay positive there is a remedy for every illness. Most children recover faster than adults.

Agree with this and everyone needs treated at the same time too. We had an outbreak in work and had to do the treatment even if we weren’t showing signs at 2100. Work also got a full deep clean as well that night so every avenue was done to break the flow as scabies is highly transmissible

Yes I definitely would, but I would reserach first on how contagious it is and their duties on reporting an outbreak so you can write a calm, informed email.
