Insurance company will reduce my cover if I employ a nanny - is this normal?

I am about to employ a nanny. I phoned my insurance company to check to see if my policy includes employers liability insurance.

I didn't even get as far as that question because they told me that if I employ a nanny in my home, they will take away my personal possesions cover (this is something I pay extra for and covers, money, credit cards, jewellery both inside and outside the home).

I trust the nanny I am about to employ (although you never know of course but I'm as sure as I can be) but if I got burgled and my jewellery or credit cards got stolen, I would not be covered.

Very annoying. I am about to start shopping around for a diffent policy (it's with Intelligent Finance btw) but am I likely to find the same thing with all insurers?

how silly

change your insurance company - intelligent Finance dont sound very intelligent to me

Not ALL nannies are thiefs!! though some MN on here have had bad nannies who do steal !!

does that mean your insurance company wouldnt cover you for a cleaner/gardener (incase they pop in your house and lose your loo and steal?) or any builders/workman you might have in your house?

I have worked for many famillies and rest assured that they have all managed to get home insurance with personal p with it

Thanks.

That's the thing though - I'm not even bothered about cover in the event that the nanny steals (as I trust her) but what I am bothered is that because they would take my cover away in general, if I got burgled properly by a criminal, they wouldn't cover me for that either. Crazy.

I phoned another insurance company and they said it wouldn't affect my cover so looks like my insurance co will be losing my business.

glad you got it sorted

Our insurance cover did this too - can I ask who you have switched to? I assumed it was standard to all insurers.
