Around how much should I expect to pay for a CM in Greater London?

My fabulous and very cheap CM is going back to Newcastle

I have found a new one and she is great, or seems to be, I sort of already know her, but she seems a little on the expensive side.

That could just be because I'm used to paying £30 a day, with food & nappies chucked in!

And she's never taken a holiday or a sick day in the year and a half I've known her!

So - she's fab, we know that, but what does everyone else charge?

I think it may vary quite a bit. Can you be any more specific with regard to location? First part of postcode for example.

I would have thought that London prices these days could easily be £50+ per day.

Thomcat · 28/05/2008 20:25

Sorry, yes of course - CM lives in North Harrow, HA....2 or something like that?

I could locate cost details for 5 childminders in your area. Range was £3.50-£5 per hour. 3 of the 5 childminders charged £4 per hour.
So £40-£60 per day looks possible in your area.

I used a childminder a couple of years ago and she charged £4.75 per hour per child.

This was Surrey, just inside the M25.

hana · 28/05/2008 20:39

I pay £4.50 (times two ) in TW2

hana · 28/05/2008 20:40

nope - that was last year, it's £5 and £5.50 for second child

Thomcat · 28/05/2008 20:47

Oh ok. Thanks so much that's really helpful.

And in that case my new CM is very reasonable too. She doesn't include nappies but does inc food.

But bloody hell my current CM is not only wonderful she's massively cheap as well, bless her1

I am looking at finding a CM at the moment and they all seem to charge 5 quid/hour/50 quid a day for 8-6. That's in NW6 though and nappies are extra (although some of them do food and others don't for that price).

FrazzledFairyFay · 29/05/2008 10:12

I pay £6/hour in TW11 and that seems normal around here

nezelette · 29/05/2008 11:03

I think I can claim to have had the cheapest nanny in London (N5): £80 for three full days!! I had to provide food and nappies though, which was a bit of a pain. I have find a new one now that I have 2 kids and I'm being quoted £5 per child per hour. now what's the point in having a CM rather than a nanny then if the cost is the same??

fimbley · 29/05/2008 11:50

I don't post very often,but....

@ £80 for three days

that's just disgusting.And you're proud of it?

OMG

nannynick · 29/05/2008 12:06

A nanny does not charge £80 for three full days... surely they were not a professional nanny - perhaps they were more an au-pair.
A nanny also works in the home of the children... so if you had been taking your child to their [the nannies] home, then they also were not a nanny, but more likely an illegal unregistered childminder.

Kewcumber · 29/05/2008 12:09

Mine is £5 per hour (no extra charge for palygroups food etc but supply own nappies and wipes) so I suppose it depends how long a day is for you.

Kewcumber · 29/05/2008 12:10

frazzles I'm TW9 and £5-£5.50 is the norm aaorund here though with paid holidays (maybe thats the difference).

FrazzledFairyFay · 29/05/2008 19:00

Kewcumber - I think the reason that I pay £6 is that I don't pay for my holidays or hers and no extra charges for playgroups, etc. She supplies everything except nappies. That said, when I was calling round, a year or so ago, I didn't find anyone in Teddington/Twickenham who was under £5.50/hour

littlefrog · 29/05/2008 19:49

gosh. we pay £7 (central london though). horribly expensive. BUT everything included, she comes and picks up/drops off DS, he's her only charge and she's just lovely. Thank heavens for childcare vouchers!

OrangeKnickers · 30/05/2008 13:42

we pay £4 an hour in central London but my CM hasn't been doing it long. Food but not nappies included.

EffiePerine · 30/05/2008 13:45

£41 a day (8-6), food and nappies not included, paid holidays.

wohmum · 30/05/2008 23:43

I'm also in HA postcode and our CM is £5 per hour , some are around 4.50 . I know Ealing ones that are £6.50 per hour!

elkiedee · 31/05/2008 21:07

Even in the same location they can vary a lot in rates. I pay £140 a week in north east London, 5 minutes walk from my house, but another very nearby charges £200 a week and I've come across more expensive ones.

DS started at 10 months and for the first few months we gave her a bit of formula for him but I otherwise said I was happy for him to be fed with other kids - he grew teeth very quickly so never really had that much babyfood as opposed to food suitable for babies learning to eat. We took disposable nappies round but she's since said she's quite happy to provide nappies.

I feel very lucky though as D seems very happy there with her, her other mindees (one slightly older toddler, 2 siblings before and after school), her own 6 year old and other older kids (aged apparently about 9-20). I really hope this childcare arrangement lasts.
