Does your nursery charge for bank holidays?

We currently use a nursery Mon, Tues and Weds where we pay for the number of days our little boy attends his nursery so our bills vary each month depending on the number of days he's in and we only pay for days the nursery is open. So we don't pay for bank holidays.

We are moving house and when looking into a nursery in the new area they use annualised billing where they take the number of days your child attends each week, multiply it by the 51 weeks they are open (closed over Christmas) and then divide by 12 so you pay the same amount each month.

When I asked how bank holidays are accounted for they have said that they are chargable. Is this common practice? Thanks

Yes, in my experience, it’s a rare nursery that doesn’t charge for bank holidays.

Vatsallfolks · 08/04/2025 18:16

I would imagine so . How on earth would they pay staff for them otherwise. Do you work bank holidays ? Or get the day off ?

DappledThings · 08/04/2025 18:16

Ours did. We paid for each day we were expected to be there at a daily rate so monthly bills varied depending on the length of the month. But Monday was one of our days and so we did end up paying for those because we were booked in on Mondays.

I’ve actually never heard of a nursery that doesn’t charge for bank holidays so I think you’ve just been lucky so far

missmarplesapprentice · 08/04/2025 18:21

Ours didn’t use to charge (they bill will vary month to month depending on the days that month) but with recent cost rises they have now implemented a 50% charge for bank holidays to help cover the costs.
they are still one of the less expensive nurseries in the area so I don’t feel they are taking advantage.

I don't pay for bank Holidays at all. I pay £40 for a morning session, this month was £40 lighter due to Easter Monday

Yes, my nursery charges for bank holidays. They have set fee per month (averaged over the year) and it is the same whichever days you go eg the fee for 1 full day is the same for Monday and Tuesday even though there are several bank holidays on Mondays.

CuriousGeorge80 · 08/04/2025 19:43

Yep! Calculated just like your new one.

StMarie4me · 08/04/2025 19:44

Do you get paid for Bank Holidays? Why do you think Nursery staff don’t?

Bodonka · 08/04/2025 20:01

Yep, we always did. One of the reasons I dropped Mondays as soon as I could 😂

GFB · 09/04/2025 08:31

Thanks all, that's good to know there's a mix but charging for BH is more common. Sounds like we were lucky to find one that doesn't. Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

@Vatsallfolksmany many jobs do not get bank holidays off. I never have had them off. Why should people pay for a service then have to again pay for another childcarer if they go to work?

AnnaBalfour · 17/04/2025 13:01

Yes it’s completely standard. Hence why many parents who go part time avoid Mondays and Fridays.
