In your opinion, how old is too old to be a nanny?

hmmm, when you're too old to chase after the kids at the park I guess?

1dilemma · 14/05/2008 22:24

I've been wondering about this too, very difficult could also ask how young is too young?
I think it depends on the ages of children you are nannying for so for teenagers quite good to have an older influence.
I have seen people advertise in thier 50s
If you are older and looking for a job have you thought about stating that at the outset (subtracting a bit of course)and pitching yourself at older children IYSWIM

It depends on the person, weather it's full time, and the age of the child.

A 70 yo would be fine with a new born, but probably not 2 yo twins full time.

nannyL · 14/05/2008 22:26

70+ish depending on the health of the person

LynetteScavo · 14/05/2008 22:28

I was basing 70 on my own mum, who rides a bike and goes to the gym.

As far as employing someone, I would be looking at someone under 65.

anyoneoutthere · 14/05/2008 22:34

Would it bother you if the person applying to be your nanny was in her 50's? (im not talking about me!)

two ways to look at it really . And obviously the persons health . Older people can be set in their ways but they can be a very calming influence . I think it depends soley on the person .

For older children no for 2 yr old twin boys yes

I know a nanny who he is 48 and rubbish. Not because she isn't a good nanny, she just doesn't have the get up and go to run about with the children or crawl about on the floor. She is also fairly overweight (which Im not digging, because I am hardly a size 8 myself) but it doesn't help with her 'energy' levels.
I wouldn't employ this particular nanny.

On the other hand a friend of mine has a nanny who is (was) retired and is amazingly spritely and brilliant with her children. I certainly would employ her.

It just depends on the individual

AtheneNoctua · 15/05/2008 10:57

I had an older nanny once. She had grown children of her own and though she knew better than me on several subjects. This pissed me off to no end. It was like having an extra MIL (not that my MIL acts like this, but you know what I mean).

I like 'em young and sporty.
