DD & opp to au pair in Portugal

DD 18 is taking a gap year after her a levels, and has been in contact with a friend of friend type situation who is looking for au pair in the autumn for a few months to look after 2 kids aged 6 and 9. Family speak English but it’s based in Portugal. DD is dual EU /UK nationality so no issue with visas etc.

She is going to have a video call in a few days - I was wondering what questions should she be asking and if there’s anything to be wary of? She’s v independent so I think she’ll be fine but I am a bit apprehensive about her staying in a house with strangers. I know she’s 18 but due to difficult experiences I had as a child I am probably being a bit over anxious!

she’s babysat before and also coaches children for a sport (opp has come about through the sports network) so she’s got a bit of experience.

Where in Portugal is it OP? It is a university city? Just thinking of opportunities for her to make friends.
Questions I would ask, how far from the city/ town is it… bus routes, taxis.. how will she get places?

What will be expected of her, how much free time will she have?

Do the kids have any additional needs, and SEN / ND?

Will she have her own bathroom, space in the evening? Will she be welcomed to use the family area in the evening?

will she be taking them to school? Weekends etc/?

Thanks all really useful questions- it’s a rural-ish area but in a town so definitely good to think about friends. She can do the sport there too so hopefully oops to make friends (assuming others speak a little English!) she doesn’t know any Portuguese!

My sister lives with her family in semi-rural central Portugal, but close to a university city. There are lots of sports teams around, tag rugby is a massive thing there! Which sport is it?
She’s made lots of friends , some English as well, the community there seem ever so friendly. Cost of living is really cheap as well , which always helps!

Au Pairs are supposed to attend language classes so check the family are going to pay for them.

What accommodation will she get?

What hours is she expected to work and what work? Eg will she effectively be a nanny or will she be more like a baby sitter who helps with housework.

Do they want her to have a first aid qualification? (I would suggest getting one anyway)

As PP said, will she have space in the evening, either her own or are the family OK with her being part of family life.

Insurance just in case anything happens.
