Ds is 2 and has recently changed nursery as we've moved (it's been about 6 mths). His old nursery were absolutely fab and on top of everything- I really couldn't fault them. The new nursery does seem good, they worked hard to help him settle in which took a while and he now seems happy enough going, but I feel like there's not as much information on how he's got on during the day.

His old nursery would have uploaded everything in the app with photos during the day and given me a quick run down of who he was playing with/ what he enjoyed/ any issues at the door and he was always bringing artwork etc home. The new nursery use the same app but it's regularly not updated during the day, there's zero feedback given at the door at pick up and a lot of days I come away without knowing what he's eaten/ what he's done - anything about the time he's been there, in 6 months he's come home with 1 piece of artwork though i can see from their planner he must be doing some. Staff all seem nice and friendly enough and he's happy to go in in the mornings so I've just been following his lead with it really. If he's happy I'm happy, however today he's come home with red bite marks on him and I know at that age they'll bite - I don't really have issue with that given their age- but I'm questioning why it wasn't mentioned when it's been hard enough to leave red marks that are still very bright at least 6 hours after pick up. It must have hurt, so he must have cried. I know you can't have eyes on them all the time but I do feel like this should have been picked up on and mentioned to me as there would have been visible marks - he's also the youngest in the room even though he's really big for his age.

Would you say to the nursery about it? I know they do a hard job and I don't want to be unnecessarily harsh and I'm conscious it might be that we were really spoilt with our old nursery and since it won't really change anything - little kids will still bite- I just want to know I'm being kept in the loop while he's still so small and can't always tell me things himself?

My child was fed had fun and I was told any important information, why would you need to know any thing else?

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 06/03/2025 06:18

The bite mark is an injury.
my cm would have discussed this and I wouldn’t be happy “finding it” and I’d raise it with the nursery ask to see the accident report and if there wasn’t one I’d be asking why….

the daily report I couldn’t be too fussed about but I have full trust in my childcare provider.

Information about the bites should have been shared, the rest is a balancing act. Parents want details, but if I'm taking photos and noting what each child has done, I'm not interacting with them effectively and supporting their development.

The bite should have been mentioned - so you should take this up. It's possible noone witnessed it.

The rest is a balancing act - it is reducing the time available to interact with your child if the staff are constantly typing on the app updating the day's happenings for multiple children - it looks good to parents but doesn't necessarily improve the level of care.

They should have told you about the bite.

The rest of it I don't really need to know day to day - I don't need the details of "she enjoyed the drawing and playing outside". I want to know if they have any concerns eg she seemed upset, or was off her food, etc.

I don't particularly want artwork sent home. We get it about once every couple of months, and a larger pack at the end of each term, and that's definitely enough! We have enough drawings of things she's done at home.

The other stuff I really don't mind that much about - it's been 6 months and ds seems happy so it's not something I would ever have mentioned but I guess when it was then coupled with not being informed about the biting it did make me wonder if there was anything else and if the communication just wasn't good rather than that they're just really busy if that makes sense. But I don't think one incident is enough to say that so if it becomes a pattern then I would question it more! I mentioned it to them and they said none of the staff noticed and ds hadn't seemed upset at any point which is fair enough!
